After all, he is the poster child for indiscriminate borrowing. He personifies the bromide, “If you owe the bank $1 million and can’t pay you have a problem. If you owe the bank $100 million and can’t pay they have a problem.” The last time there was an economic downturn he was almost forced into bankruptcy (but the banks didn’t want to take the hit so they floated him). Since then, in a strong economic environment, he has lost his casinos (brilliant businessman that he is).
So what’s his status now? I haven’t seen his name bandied about lately.
I don’t have much to contribute to this answer to this thread, but I recall a previous thread on the subject and Mr. Trump seems to go out of his way to be rather more evasive about his value than other presumably “similarly” wealthy people.
Keep in mind of course, he isn’t a publicly traded company and he doesn’t owe it to anyone to explain his exact level of assets and liabilities, but it seems like a significnat part of his income depends on already having money and convincing people of his financial prowess (all of the Trump brand books, Trump “University”, etc.), but the consensus of the prior thread was that it is certainly within his interests and it seems as if he overstates his wealth and the profitability of his numerous diverse enterprises. I’m still looking for the thread,
Donald set his daughter Ivanka up in the jewelry designer business. This from Wiki:
I have walked by the store several times. It is a small storefront in an exclusive area on Madison Ave. (read: high rent). I know a number of people who also know where the store is and have walked by it. Although the store is staffed with a clerk and a security guard nobody has ever seen anybody that looks like a customer in the store. I could be wrong but it sounds like a losing operation to me.
IIRC, he gave up most of his interest in the casinos during the reorganization that took place at the time he was near bankruptcy, though they kept the Trump name. He recently stated (two or three years ago, I believe) that his remaining casino holdings (at that time) amounted to only two percent of his total net worth.
As far as I’ve heard, he is doing fine. He’s building golf courses, resorts, etc., etc., all over the place. One is in Scotland and the locals are fighting it.
He said once that most of the people who don’t like him have never met him. I suspect you fall in that category. He is quite a brilliant businessman, actually.
