I’ve been a Virginia Slims gal for the past 14 years, but I like Benson & Hedges as an alternative. I prefer slim cigarettes, because guys usually won’t ask to bum smokes from a chick who smokes V-slims.
I just tried my first Pall Mall a few minutes ago, because the store next door is out of almost everything… not bad, but I miss my skinny girly smokes.
My folks smoke Kent 100’s. I wish they smoked something a little more common because I could pick up cartons for them at Duty Free shops when I travel (you don’t find Kents there, lemme tell ya). Or better yet, that they stopped smoking. Of course, they only drink Old Style beer, too. They’re throwbacks, those two. I like it.
Looks like I’m going to have to start offering more than a quarter for a smoke . . .
I lived in the Bay Area when the ordinance came down against smoking in bars (at the time I left, they were working on an ordinance whereby you couldn’t smoke in your own home if, say, a plumber or other service worker was there), but there was a way around it (besides standing outside). My friend John was a smoker, and he and I (and his GF) would often go to a TINY! little hole-in-the-wall bar (seriously no bigger than a shoebox).
It was pretty much a one-man operation, see, and because the logic behind the ordinance was that bar employees should not be subjected to second hand smoke, he could still allow smoking in his bar, because he didn’t HAVE any employees. Sometimes his wife (gf?) would come in and help him in a pinch, but she wasn’t on any official payroll, so there you have it.
We’d go to our favorite little breakfast place late on a Saturday morning, and then hit the bar (which was on the same block) when it opened at noon. Al Green was on the jukebox (but he wasn’t on the payroll, either, so it was still OK :D)
Good times.
Anyway, if you know of any tiny little bars, you might see if one of them could provide a loophole.
A friend just came back from Spain with some cigarettes she didn’t like, and asked if I wanted them. I tried one and they were fine by me. I’m smoking one now, and strangely, considering the current war, they’re called “Desert Gold”.
I started by stealing my Grandma’s Camel Non-filters… ick.
Now… Misty Methol Light 120’s - most people won’t bum 'em, my ex used to tear the filter off so it looked more “manly”. He usually would roll his own, we used to get some funny looks in restaurants…
Judging by the empty packs strewn about the neighborhood there are a ton of kids that smoke Parliament menthol and regular. Plenty of Camel smokers too but they are outnumbered four to one. I say “kids” because most adults around here don’t pitch empty packs out of their car window.
i started on silk cuts and prefer those, the closest equivalent to silk cuts are benson and hedges special light, or ultra special (canadian version) and used to smoke them til I quit, or am trying to quit.
I don’t smoke, but I thought I’d add that I sell a pack of rare stuff like kent or carlton or lucky strike cigarettes maybe once every 10 hours of working, and we’re fairly busy.
By far, the most common cigarette sale is marlboro lights - they outsell regular marlboro by 4:1 or so, and camel (all types) by 2 or 2.5 to 1.
