does baseball owe it to America

Without getting into all the talks between owners and players in Mafor League Baseball, do they owe it to the American fans to do whatever it is in their might and power to make sure that baseball is on strike come 9/11.

It is the vast majority opinion that the fact that baseball continued on after the attack that affected all Americans, helped us continue on in our daily lives.

If America’s favorite pastime is in another work stoppage come 9/11, our first anniversary of the attack, they will no longer carry that distinction.

I know it is not their responsibility as entertainers, however I feel it is their duty to make sure they persevere through as Americans are trying to do the same.

I think you left out at “not.”

But you’re right – a work stoppage would show Americans that baseball is back to normal.

I don’t think baseball necessarily owes it to America, although it would be hideous timing. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least since this is a sport that can’t get out of it’s own way with Selig at the helm.

Rather, baseball owes it to itself, because if they go on strike they will lose fans that will never come back. After the last strike, I decided to put on a 10 year personal moratorium on spending money on anything that would benefit MLB. If this strike happens, that will extend to a lifetime ban and I will not be watching or going to any games. I will be done with the sport and I imagine I am not the only supposed diehard fan to be pushed to the breaking point.

YAWN
Boring.

What, do you think that if they do go on strike that the sun won;t come up the next morning?

OH PLEASE.

Just to show you how clever and devious the players association is, according to the LA Times they have agreed to a tentative strike date of September 16, which gets them off the hook as far as the whole 9/11 bullshit is concerned.

The world will go on, with or without the utter meaninglessness that is MLB.

I’m a huge baseball fan.

And whether or not there is a strike is a matter for the two sides to sort out. What will I do if there is no MLB? Survive presumably.

It’s an entertainment, albeit one with some patriotic wrapping on it, but that’s all.

My love for the game of baseball won’t be diminished by a strike. My respect for the owners is already so low that it can’t be measured.

Interesting. I read a column in one of the New York papers not long ago biatching about how the Mets and Yankees were supposed to play on 9/11/02 (the Mets at home, the Yankees on the road).

If baseball goes on strike in September, no one will care unless the World Series is cancelled again. Football has long surpassed baseball in terms of measurable interest (ie TV ratings).

<hijack> I’ve begun to wonder if someone will come up with the idea of starting another entirely new league(s). If there is a strike then sometime in the near future might be a perfect time to try</hijack>
