Does BBQing Cause Cancer?

Link to column.

Just because I feel like it, let’s juxtapose a couple of thoughts from this column and a recent Staff Report:

Heh.

I think I like Cecil’s late summer columns–are they more relaxed and banterish? I remember one from last year about the Cubs, and in this one, Cecil offers to buy the beer. I’m kinda liking that idea. [sub](But which is worse for you, dark beer or light?)[/sub]

Finally, is Slug’s picnic lady actually wearing anything?

Yes–she’s wearing a hat.

And glasses.

And what the heck are the little things flying off the burger? Molecules? Cooties?

I remember hearing a report on a medical paper that said marinating the meat for 4 hours prior to barbecuing greatly reduced the carcinogen problem. Has anyone else heard this? Reference pls if you know it?

Little skulls and crossbones.

I’m not so sure that’s a hat.

I tried to enter this debate but by error started a new topic titled Burnt Food Causes Cancer. My apologies. Here is my intended post. TRUE-BRIT.

This topic is important to all citizens of the Western World, especially, because of its very high [excessive] meat consumption to citizens of the USA. I ask you to accept without further proof or discussion that the initiating post is correct and to understand that all food, especially meat products, that are cooked, roasted, or deep fried at high temperatures undergo a slight chemical change, and contain if they have been burnt whilst cooking, a small dose of cancerous causing agents. One or two meals will not do a great deal of harm perhaps, but 365 such meals per year will. I ask you to examine all food before you eat it and if its charred, burnt, scorched, or been reheated to not eat it [reccommended] or to trim all the outer layer/s burnt bits off it.

To avoid Cancer in young chidlren please exercise great care in purhasing food, please boil your meat [Alright, i know its not the same] and please refuse to eat any food - which is burnt. Please do not attend barbecues, do not eat food burnt over a revolving spit, and guard your health. You know that one person in three will die of cancer, so why not ask yourself why? Ask yourself what caused it to develop in this person. . Please accept that it is the way in we cook our food especially meat/s that is the root cause of most cancers. I would advocate that we scrap all domestic ovens, I would forbid their sale and use. You know about the link between smoking and lung cancer don’t you, you have read the warnings, and many of you still ignore them, but isn’t it about time you realise, that when you smoke a cigarette you are in effect cooking and inhaling the smoke from BURNT LEAVES, tobacco plant leaves, a plant that is cooked at high temperatures by burning it between a sleeve of paper.

Some of you will be saying to yourselves, I have never ever eaten burnt food in my life, well will you to do something for me, the next time you see a street vendor selling hamburgers or hotdogs or sauages have a good look at the food he his selling and the hotplate he is using. You will see that its some of the food is black, filthy, and the black-soot residue on it and the hotplate is a cancer causing agent. If you dare, go on i dare you, take a tissue and wipe the rim of his hot plate with it, the results will sicken you. I promise you, you will never buy another food item from a street vendor again and will maybe avoid fast food chains also. Now i want you to find a shop that sells roasted chickens, i want you to check these for black charred bits? Now, your last and final self check-test, go into any supermarket and turn the baked bread thats for sale up side down, you will find the underside of nearly all bread, cakes, bread rolls and pastrys is scorched and burnt. This food burn is a CANCER CAUSING AGENT. I estimate Americans eat unknowingly maybe 25 /100 million ton of burnt food per year and it is this which is causing the Cancer Plague in our populations. Both my wifes parents died of cancer, my father died of cancer, thats 75% of our parent line, you can stop this toll by spreading the word, by taking this link seriously. Please remember this simple message: BURNT FOOD COSTS LIVES.

TREU-BRIT. LEEDS, ENGLAND. [NEW POSTER]

Did anyone else check out the link in the column to JunkScience.com ? This is a great website, especially the short course on “Junk Science Judo”. It explains how junk science becomes so widespread and goes over the basics of genuine scientific information (starting with the scientific method).

I am actively involved in ecological research during the summer and during the school year I am an undergraduate in a science program. The next time that someone in my research group points out some dubious science or criticizes me for being an informed sceptic, I’m sending them right over to that website.

TRUE-BRIT, could we have some cites, please, with that post?

I’m not picking on you here, by the way. It’s just that there’s a lot of information out there, not all of it correct, and so we here on this board like to know where a piece of information comes from. If you can point us to some papers in Lancet, for instance, or an official statement from the National Institute of Health, that would put a lot of weight behind what you’re saying. If, on the other hand, the source of your information is “My uncle’s best friend’s cousin’s roommate barbequed every weekend, and now he’s dead of cancer”, then you can understand that we would be skeptical. If we accepted without proof everyone who told us that something-or-another caused cancer, then we’d all starve to death.

Of course not.

In short: I ask you to not ask any questions and blindly accept what I tell you.

TRUE-BRIT, this is about the last place in the entire world you’ll find people willing to grant you that request. The only people who won’t ask for further proof or discussion here are those who discount you out of hand, as I will now proceed to do.

[QUOTE=Chronos]
TRUE-BRIT, could we have some cites, please, with that post?

**If you can point us to some papers in Lancet, for instance, or an official statement from the National Institute of Health, that would put a lot of weight behind what you’re saying. ** REPLY FROM TRUE-BRIT.

I Will gladly dig up all the articles and put them together for you if you will agree to carry out the three simple self-checks i asked for. Will you post your replies on your own observations on any 2 hotplates you see, will you please view 1 chicken rottiserie / spit and check the cooked chicken for burn/s, charred bits, and will you please view the bottom of each loaf of supermarket bread or cakes or pastries or baked goods if you can. After this admittedly very unscientific check then you be the judge, the estimator, on how much burnt food we are all unwittingly eating.

I admit in advance that these Scientific Papers concerning High temperature food/s have caused no stir, no interest, no impact whatsoever in the British Public mind. Our National newspapers have ignored the subject, apart from the Daily Mail who give it an 1/2 page splash. But it might well be the clue that explains the dramatic increase in Cancer throughout our respective societys. I have heard a rumour [I actually i read it somewhere] a rumour that i have never been able to substantiate, that in parts of Africa were they do not have ovens, that do not have hot-grills, who boil all their cooked foods, that Cancer is unknown. Its also said to be the case with Heart Attacks that in some regions heart attacks are unknown. Is this the fabled food connection! As i said this is just a rumour, but the above isn’t. There is a link and scientists have reported their findings.

I hope you will forgive me for asking you to check the food in your neighbourhood, it might well be you are a very busy man and this task is not for you, if so, would you mention this to your wife or a friend to ascertain their views and observations. Can i inform you and please accept that i myself can identify a person with Cancer by simply looking at him/ her. Many Drs claim to have this ability also. I am not a Dr. The North of England is a Cancer Plague Hot Spot. I also know that the cure rate for Cancer has not improved in the last 65 years. I know that this statement will cause protests - but please accept that the National Cancer rate figures are inaccurate and many Docters despair that a cure will ever be found.

My view is that maybe the answer lies in the food we eat, and all i am asking you and any other interested party is not to eat burnt food. If you wish to do so then thats your choice. The advice is don’t. May i add that if they announced a cure for Cancer tomorrow, if they asked people to visit their Doctors for say a 14 day wonder tablet - the take up rate will be less than 1%. Even after 3 months of extensive publicity the take up rate will be less than 2%. The wonder drug of the last decade is/was the simple Asprin. How many people do you know who are taking it voluntarity? the answer is again almost nil. And its the same with this theory. i do not expect people to change the eating habits of a lifetime overnight. My apologies for the length of this post, I do not apologise for my passionate belief that burnt food is the Key to understanding Cancer Causation. I do not apologise for wondering 'How Come so many of us are dying from Cancer and WHY. Just look around you and count the grave stones.

TRUE-BRIT. LEEDS, ENGLAND.

Done. Result: Lots. Now, where are those cites you mentioned?

Mathochist, your brief message displayed great wisdom.

So lets all get typing into our Google Search Engines and dig up the clues for and against. Will you try to explain what is wrong with our Sociertys from a medical point of view.

Tell me why did my father, my mother-in-law, my father-in-law die of Cancer. Why is my brother John and his wife dying of Cancer. Why did my Sister Mary die of an heart attack brought on they say by Breast Cancer just 4 weeks ago. She had had her breast removed. And my sister Betty 10 years ago. Why is my wife and no doubt your wife if your married checking their breasts each week for suspicious lumps? Whats going on and why do we accept this state of Affairs.

If i wrote a long article with say 3 pages of notes in medical jargon attached how many would read it. 90% of our TV News modern world is written word blind. From the number of your posts i exclude you and other long term posters. Regards.

TRUE-BRIT. LEEDS. ENGLAND

Did you hear that the incidence of cancer is higher in countries with fluoridated water? I have a feeling there’s a connection here…

Would you please post all the information you have on this issue and cite all your references. What we don’t want is ‘Your local nieghbourhood watch stories’ that were triggered off by some overheard local gossip. Otherwise, so sorry, we will have to discount you.

TOUCHE’
TREU-BRIT.

TRUE BRIT, I think the technical term for Mathochist’s comment is “sarcasm.” Some of our posters have a well-honed edge for sarcasm, and it often flies right over my head, too.

Indeed, Dex. BRIT, would you care to look up the life expectancy figures for these nations you’re talking about? Like those countries without fluoridated water, they’re not that rich and the life expectancy is relatively low. Cancer is primarily a disease of old age. This can explain the rarity of cancer in those countries and, incidentally, the rise in cancer rate within the last hundred years: people are just living longer and not dying of something else first.

Correllation is not causation.

Maybe they smoked six packs of cigarettes a day. Maybe you and your family live in a badly polluted area. Maybe they were exposed to too much Agent Orange in Vietnam. Maybe they spent 12 hours a day out in the sun without sunscreen, year-round. Maybe they were all working on a movie in Nevada downwind of nuclear bomb tests. And maybe they were just unlucky. I’m sorry about your losses, and I sympathize. I understand that you would be justifiably upset and angry, and that you would want a scapegoat, but without a lot more information, we can’t even guess what might have caused their cancers.
