US Officials are barred, unless congress gives permission. This is often done in the case of one our Generals getting a Knighthood, etc.

And, altho her music is rather shallow, I have no problems with her, and I wish her all the happiness she deserves.

He did get knighted, but I think he also renounced his US citizenship for political reasons. Whether that was before or afterwards I don’t know. Hitchcock did as well, but I think he remained a British citizen throughout his life.

Bob Hope got knighted and I believe he is still a US citizen. I’m not sure what the UK connection was in his case, but I think he must have a had a British/Commonwealth parent. I believe that, because he’s a US citizen, he can’t use the title, “Sir Bob” (ditto Bob Geldof, who’s an Irish citizen).

But a knighthood is not a hereditary title or a title of nobility.

Reasons to dislike Britney Spears:

Mostly, 'cuz she sucks. She can’t sing. She sings through her nose (hence the very nasal sound in her voice). This is a trick used by wannabe-singers who want to sound good. It works some of the time, but for some pitches of voice, it’s a dead giveaway.

Second, she’s garnered unwarranted popularity. She can’t sing, can’t dance, can’t write lyrics (her Studio Exec bosses hire choreographers and lyricists for her… she just stands there and looks pretty, basically). People like HER for work that other people do. And DON’T take this to mean that I think celebrities don’t deserve their fame… a lot of stars have earned their popularity through immense talent, intelligence, or, yes, even good looks. Which leads to my next point…

Third, she’s rather ugly. And no, I wouldn’t touch her had I the opportunity.

I agree that her singing leaves much to be desired. But I think she’s a good dancer.

Any fool can be taught how to dance. But you really can’t change a voice once you get it. Sure, you can control it, but you can’t change it. I just want to throw her and her pompous attitude out of the country. . .

I dislike Ms. Spears for the same reasons I dislike Ms. Aguilera and the various Ms. Spices. I agree with pretty much everything said in the above thread about her superficiality, unwarranted fame, etc. But I could forgive all that if she would just leave the kids alone. Her target audience is six to twelve year old girls, most of whom don’t even -know- about sex yet, but are singing and dancing along to Britney cd’s and videos laden with barely concealed sexual innuendo. They see Britney, gyrating around barely clothed, and they get the idea that it’s cool–that’s what big girls do; but these kids haven’t even hit puberty yet! It’s fine with me if she wants to purvey this stuff to teenagers and adults, but it’s sick to give this stuff to little girls, many of whom should still be watching Sesame Street, not Britney Sex Kitten videos.
The six year old girl I babysit for has all of Britney’s albums, and watches her videos, transfixed, awed, worshipful, whenvever they come on the Disney (!!!) Channel. She’s memorized all the dance steps, and writhes around the house, singing nasty Britney songs all day. And she’s SIX YEARS OLD!

Feh.
Leave the little girls (and boys) alone, Britney, Christina, Mandy, Spices, and the various boy groups.
Let them hit at least the age of thirteen before filling their little minds with your ideals of womanhood (i.e., dressing and acting like a slut)

I don’t know if there is any law in the U.S. that would force her to give up her citizenship, but I can’t imagine the British would like having a U.S. citizen as queen. There may be a law that says that she can’t become queen unless she becomes a British subject.

So according to this site (and my recall of the movie), Chaplin was NOT a U.S. citizen, but a British one. He lived in the U.S. but on a visa. When he left for the European tour that time, he was at odds with the U.S. gov and they took the opportunity to refuse his return. Thus he moved to Switzerland.

Incidently, the points that put him at odds with the government, first was a big morals stink where he was sued by a lady who claimed he got her pregnant. He did not. In fact, he had a history of knocking up women, marrying them, and then later divorcing them when it didn’t work out, but he took care of his children. This was a case of the lady using him as a scapegoat - the court declared he was the father, but I believe it was determined that he really was not (blood tests, I think, which were still in the early stages and were discredited - kinda like the OJ DNA evidence).

The political aspects came with the communism scare. He was targeted as being a communist, but I don’t think that he was.
