Does Coffee Really Work?

It’s a great morning-starter and poop-stimulant.

Time now for a rant against TPTB for not getting our lounge Bunn-O-Matic fixed, expecting we will instead use the Keurig artificially flavored caramel dishwater machine. I’ll have to start bringing in a thermos of the powerhouse coffee from home again.*

*double strength espresso blend really does the trick.

I’m not too far off this attitude although I still use a cup of coffee some mornings in preference to tea occasionally or soda never.

The withdrawal headache thing is real for a lot of people. So don’t quit cold turkey. It’s not hard to get back to zero over a month or so. Even the one pot in the morning one pot in the afternoon crowd can be off the stuff within 3 months with few if any painful symptoms if they try.

Or don’t bother if they’re happy with their current lot.

I’ve never been a coffee drinker, but I know if I notice I have a headache later in the day it will be because I didn’t have my Diet Coke with lunch.

My husband is the same way. It’s not unusual for him to make himself a cup of espresso an hour or so before going to bed.

IIRC catnip only has effect on 80% of the cat population.

I used to drink 8-10 cups of coffee every day but even then did not get withdrawal headaches or other symptoms when I went without. Now I drink 2-4 cups most days because I like a nice hot beverage in the morning, but if I skip it for some reason I can’t say I notice much difference. I must be one of those people who isn’t very much affected by caffeine.

This thread reminded me of the “Coffee Achievers” campaign back in the 1980s. I was amused by the presence of Kurt Vonnegut in one of the ads; my best guess is that he really did like coffee and at the same time he was doing it ironically, because those ads were about as hokey as they come. (Hard to believe this is from 1984; it feels like something that would have been made a decade or two earlier: Ad from the National Coffee Association 1984 - YouTube)

My SIL is sorta similar.

She’s admittedly ADHD and for those folks neuro-stimulants of all sorts have paradoxical reactions. She needs to take a nap? She’ll have coffee to slow her down enough to sleep.

A tip I’ve used in the past to “reset” my tolerance is to substitute a scoop of decaf for a scoop of regular coffee in each pot I make, so it’s 9 scoops regular, 1 decaf. The next week, I’ll bump it to 2 decaf, 8 regular. Rinse and repeat until you get to full decaf. As long as you space out how often you bump the decaf up, it’s pretty much painless.

You can do it with smaller intervals than a week, it depends on the person and how high the tolerance is. If your plan is to do it than less than a month, I’d just stock up on ibuprofin and suffer through the withdrawal, as it’s usually only 3-5 days long.

10 scoops?! I hope that’s a small scoop and a large communal pot! If not you’ll look about like this:  and you’ll be up for a week waiting for your eyes to shrink back to

Works for me. I do not consume large quantities, tho. I usually drink a 1-2 cups each morning and that’s it for the day. On days where I skip a cup for some reason, I may get the headache later in the day, but not always.

I like the ritual of making coffee - I think that is as much a part of getting the day going as the drink itself.

I like my coffee like I live my death stars. Gigantic, on the dark side, and strong enough to blow up a planet.

I like my coffee like my women: black & bitter!!

An old joke, but a good one.

I’ve heard that. A friend’s husband, who is ADD, used to do similar before he was diagnosed for the same reason. My husband has never been diagnosed, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he actually is for other reasons, not just the coffee.

I feel sorry for people who don’t drink coffee. When they get up in the morning that’s the best they’re going to feel all day.

*With apologies to Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and whoever else that quote is ripping off.

Unless about three years ago, you bought a full kilo of pharmaceutical grade caffeine before the FDA started pressuring the sellers to cut down the amounts.

Some of you in this thread need to know about Death Wish Coffee.

When last on an extended trip to the US, I got some as a lark, thinking it would taste nasty (it’s robusta not arabica) and might make me hyper. But I was pleasantly surprised to discover it doesn’t taste bad at all (though I am not a coffee snob … still, I tend to prefer mild-tasting coffees rather than the ones described as “bright” or “acid”).

It might have a greater stimulant effect; I’m not sure (and I wasn’t willing to down a large amount of it as an experiment; I took it easy and only ever drank 1-2 cups at a time). But it’s pretty good. I can’t get it regularly because of not living in the US, but my preferred strategy would be to keep it around and make a pot when I feel like a little extra, bracing energy kick. It either works for real or as a placebo; either way I’m happy.

Many people do report a SERIOUS caffeine reaction.

.

You can buy that by the cup at the local Teapresso chain of shops. Or at least you can at the one in downtown Honolulu on Bishop Street off of Hotel Street. I assume the rest too.

Oh you big city folks, lording it over those of us in the boonies! AFAIK you can’t get Death Wish on the Big Island* unless you mail order it.

Mark my words, I’m going to visit Honolulu one of these days and make you buy me a cup.

  • (The Hawaiian island where I live when I’m in the United States, for those who understandably can’t be bothered to keep track. I fully intend to meet Siam Sam in real life in a year or two, when I move to Hawaii for reals and will almost certainly come to Oahu occasionally.)

Death Wish Coffee is on the shelf at our local Safeway. Not sure if they are in Hawaii, but check you local chain grocery. Still, $20 a bag is kinda expensive for beans not passed through a civet.

Ditto!

ETA: And I only have 1-2 cups per day.
