Does Dan Quayle receive Secret Service protection?

Dan Quayle was Vice President from Jan 20 1989- Jan 20 1993. Does he still receive Secret Service Protection?

No.

"Who does the Secret Service protect?

The president, vice president, president-elect, and vice president-elect, and their immediate family members. Also former presidents and their spouses and their children, up to age 16. This means that Bill and Hillary Clinton will continue to get Secret Service protection when Clinton leaves office, but Chelsea will finally be free to go on a date without being chaperoned by an armed agent. The Secret Service also protects major presidential candidates (the secretary of the treasury decides who’s “major”) and visiting foreign leaders. The president can also ask for temporary protection for other people. For example, the Secret Service guarded the pope on his last visit."

Oddly, starting with George W Bush, Presidents only get protection for 10 years based on law passed during the Clinton Administration.

He should. I mean, I hear Cheney’s been trying to hunt him down.

What?

I don’t think the Secret Service guards foreign dignitaries- that is the job of the Diplomatic Security Service.

The DSS are badasses, even more so than the Secret Service. My brother is a special forces operator who also does executive protection, and he saw those guys guarding the Dalai Lama when he was out here. His verdict- very professional, very serious. Especially when they are protecting someone like the dalai Lama, who insists on being close to people, and touching them and allowing himself to be touched. Security details hate that.

A friend of mine was at Stanford with Chelsea and said she was always followed (at a respectable distance) by the two same “students” who never took off their hats or their backpacks.

When did Quayle’s Secret Service protection end? How about Walter Mondale?

Shagnasty’s link would seem to indicate that quayle’s protection ended when the Clinton administration took office in early 1993.

Mondale, apparently, would have been entitled to protection while he was VP, and again during the 1984 presidential elections. Presumably, in 1984, he lost protection when the electoral college re-elected reagan.
