Good job guys, I knew Pachebel would make it in here at some point.
Why don’t you ask Cezar Mateus or Andrea Tacchi to grab some vermicelli and a bough, work magic, and fashion that into a bow somehow. If you want a smaller instrument, get a lira da braccio
And maybe a crwth, while you’re at it.
Oh, and IMHO it’s an instrument somewhat associated with nerdiness it seems. I like all stringed instruments, but it seems some people hate them, especially violins (ubiquity?).
I agree with this. It first came to my attention in a Walker Percy novel called Love in the Ruins…something about the way Lola held it, and the low, vibrating sound…
Hah! That takes me back to an old Encyclopedia Brown mystery. The alibi of one of the story’s villains was blown because, although she claimed that she had just returned from cello practice, she was wearing a really tight skirt.
Yeah, I guess. I lucked into a good conversation with a random woman the other week – she mentioned she played 'cello but her chops were down but could still play pizzicatto (sp?). I made a joke about arco something (a dumb pun, can’t remember) and brought up Shostakovich’s String Quartets – she gave a pretty good verbal lesson on similarities between (the 8th or 9th) and one of the Concertos of his.
If you like small-group music, the cello is in there, and who doesn’t like chamber music?
? Rostropovich? Ron Carter played cello in some jazz settings. So did Eldee Young IIRC – I can’t play doghouse bass, but some of those guys tried a little something with cello.
Casals?
Lots of people were the Cello Kings, man. I’ll have to look up Scarpantoni – don’t know her music.
