Does everyone like the cello?

The other day I was thinking about cellos. There’s just so much to like about them. They can play high, low, or in between. They have a beautiful sound. They sound good in just about any style of music.

I was just wondering something weird… most people probably like the cello. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t like cellos?

Do you like the cello? What do you like about it?

I like the cello, but I played (badly) it in high school, so I’m biased.

You forgot one of its virtues: a woman playing the cello is, for some reason, damn sexy!

I like the cello, jello, the color yellow. Coincidence?

I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone not like the cello, now that you mention it. I’ve met saxophone haters, clarinet detractors, and of course bagpipe bashing is practically a religion in some parts. But yeah…seems like *everyone *likes the cello.

I know I do.

Pachelbel hates the cello.

Dear advertisers, Our brains no longer process Bach’s cello suite #1 played my Yo Yo Ma as anything other than ambient vibrations.

That’s a damn, DAMN good point, says the former cellist.

I love the cello, it’s one of my favorite orchestral instruments along with the oboe (which is a serioudly under appreciated instrument). There is nothing else in the world that is quite like the cello. It is also probably the sexiest instrument, though I couldn’t tell you exactly why.

I love good cello music. One of my favorite pieces of music is Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A, Op 69.

Who knew but cellos are becoming rock instruments. Or at least 2Cellos doing Highway to Hellamong others…

I am old enough to remember that, when you saw a female orchestra member wearing pants, it was certain that they played cello. All of the other performers had to wear skirts.

It hasn’t been that way for quite a while now.

I don’t like that it’s not spelled “chello”.

What is it about that song and covers? Hayseed Dixie does it bluegrassy.

There’s always room for cello.

Well, when I play bass clarinet, it’s not really good to wear a skirt.

Aw man, as soon as I read the thread title I thought “I have to post that Pachelbel rant video!” but you beat me to it.

The Who had wanted to include a cello on their 1966 “mini opera”, “A Quick One While He’s Away”. They couldn’t afford to hire a session cellist though, so just sang the word “cello” over and over again where they had wanted a cello to be playing. If you skip forward to 6:55 on the song you can hear it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIpsDTSmRyM They even did this when performing the song live (5:25): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcMo_857xhA

Otis Taylor has toured with a cellist (using an electric one) while playing blues. I do like the sound and wish it were used more in rock and blues.

I’m not exactly fond of it. Too large and unwieldy.

That is hilarious that Steve Vai is in that. For even more cello, you have to see these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JjQGt7WjK0
