Recommend some Cello Music

I recently downloaded two of Zoe Keating’s albums on a whim (based off an article I read in a magazine), which are entirely made up of her looping Cellos on top on each other. The music is fabulous. I love the tones and mood. However, I know absolutely nothing about this type of music. Can anyone recommend other artists or albums that are either Cello-centric or other moody string-based instrumentals? I am mainly interested in instrumentals, although I won’t rule out vocals.

FTR, I am familiar with Rasputina, a cello-based band Keating was in before. I like their overall style, but have never gotten into their vocals.

The late Jacqueline du Pre was a cello genius.

I love Julian Lloyd Webber. Not as famous as his brother Andrew, but good.

South American Getaway B. Bacharach 12 cellos da filarmónica de Berlim.wmv

Eugene Friesen plays with the Paul Winter Consort (where he usually uses a bow) and has some solo stuff. Saw him several years ago and he did a beautiful sort of singing along with his cello.

I personally enjoy Kodaly’s sonatas for cello and piano. Naxos made a great recording of them a few years back.

My favorite cover band is Apocalyptica they do some great metal for just having four cellos.

And you can currently get all her recordings – 17 CDs! – for a bit over $50. Just her recording of the Elgar cello concerto is worth that price.

Have you heard any Jorane?
Ineffable
Sauve moi

Thank you. Never heard that before. Fuck me Bacharach is a genius.

Oddly enough, I started “South American Getaway” – Why so popular? on 10-29-2010, and it would appear that the “popularity” of the piece is all in my mind.

If you saw Butch and Sundance, odds are this tune will be familiar. The vocalese version is amazing!

Although it’s worth mentioning that they’re not just a novelty cover band. They’ve done quite a bit of original stuff, and some of it is really beautiful. F’rinstance (ignore the visuals, as always)

Edit: Also, IIRC, they’re down to three cellos.

I have indeed, often. At the moment I am re-reading William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade.

What can one do with heathens? Mention Hal David, the best lyricist of the last 50 years, and all you get are puzzled expressions.

Thanks for all the replies, these are just what I was looking for.

Ofra Harnoy. (And seriously, if I were straight, I’d do her).

Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata.

And we seem to have forgotten the most stereotypical cello music of all.

and this one too: Bach’s Cello Suite #1, Prelude

I also just recently downloaded some of Zoe Keating’s stuff after hearing it in a radio ad, and was looking for some similar stuff (and was contemplating just this sort of thread!).

Anyway, someone who is pretty similar to Keating is Gretchen Yanover - she also does the looping cellos thing, though her stuff is a bit more mellow than Keating’s (the two go great together in a playlist though).

I’ll have to check out some of the other recommendations mentioned here, as well…

Benjamin Britten - Cello Suite No. 1

Not sure what you mean by moody, but I’d recommend Alina, by Arvo Part to ANYBODY. It’s a violin and not a cello in the Speigel im Speigel sections though.

Besides limoncello, my favourite cellist is Erik Friedlander, though I would imagine the more important requirement would be to be a fan of that “scene” of music first.

Here’s a fun piece:
