Does Kanye West know Mandarin?

I’m reading the book Dragon Bones by Lisa See and in it the words kan ye mean “to boast and brag.” Just wondering if it’s coincidence or…deliberate? :dubious:

Kanye is his given name. It’s an Igbo name meaning ‘let’s give’ The Igbo are from Nigeria.

It’s possible that he does considering he lived in China and went to school there as a child, but that has nothing to do with his name.

So it’s his given name then. Did make me wonder.

He’s currently in the news again. He harassed a couple people in the audience at his concert for not standing.

One of the people not standing was in a wheelchair and the other was waving his prosthetic leg in the air.

Kanye is a wonder.

That’s one understated way to put it.

Is that what they’re calling it these days?

No. Stevie is a Wonder. Kanye is a jerk.

Thanks Ellen Cherry. Yeah, I guess it was the current “awkward moment” that made me read kan ye together.

And in 10 years he’ll be another once-was in the bargain bin at K-Mart alongside Milli Vanilli.

He’s already been on the charts for 10 years. Dropped his first album in 2004. Doesn’t make me like him any better, but he’s no flash in the pan.

Thanks. This made me laugh. And I needed the laugh tonight.

Kanye’s craziness has an amazing ability to be inappropriate. I bet people trying hard couldn’t duplicate it.

I’m no fan of Kanye’s behaviour / ego in general, but he’s not the first to make this particular gaffe – I seem to recall a politician doing it after a campaign speech. It’s very embarrassing for all concerned, and good to spread awareness so others don’t do it, but I don’t think it especially highlights his ego or insensitivity to a group’s needs. Just like I say, lack of awareness.

Certainly I’ve been to events where they say “C’mon…everyone on your feet!” a few times, and there have been disabled people in the audience.

But Kanye, being Kanye, took it to a whole new level. He doesn’t just tell his audience to stand up - he means it. He stops singing and will literally not continue if anyone is seated.

Now he does accept the reality that some people are disabled and can’t stand. But he sends his security people out into the audience to check on anyone who isn’t standing and verify they are physically unable to obey Kanye’s orders.

I’m not sure what happens if somebody in the audience just chooses not to stand. Does Kanye have them thrown out? Does he end the concert?

I’m wondering if the Chinese have adopted the word in the last ten years.

He dropped it? He should be more careful.

(Yeah, yeah. I know. Get off my lawn.)

He used to go to school in Nanjing, China.
