A very simple question I think, yes or no. What I think is interesting is the possibilities of the second half… Is love a chemical reaction? Is it a seasonal drive? Is it an extension of the soul? Or is it simply some B.S. idea that Hallmark uses to sell cards and crappy candy…? You make the call…

It is all those things, of course. It’s chemical and magical, seasonal and eternal, an extension of the soul and a behavioural product of brutal natural selection. It is both poetry and biology. It’s colossal Hallmark B.S. and it’s the sincerest thing in the human condition. It resides in the brain and the heart, exists in reality and fantasy, is sold and given away for free, is unrequited and returned. It evokes the worst and the best people have to offer. It causes us to commit acts of unspeakable evil and gives us the inspiration to commit acts of the greatest beauty and nobility. It elicits the deepest pain and regret, and then brings joy greater than any words can express. It heals and wounds, builds and destroys, makes war and makes peace, gives and takes, nurtures and infects, strengthens and weakens, embitters and transports. It is these things and a thousand more.

Love started as a set of chemical and neurological reactions which served to help propogate the species, now, however, through contunued evoloution (both as a species, and a society) love has become more then that (or at least we think it has). Evidence for this includes the fact that many people fall in love with people’s personalities, not just their body
