Does Luminol Stain?

I realize that if luminol is being used on your property, stains are the least of your worries, but anyway . . . Does it?

According to This luminol has hydrogen peroxide in it, that would stain eh. But what colour would it stain. Peroxide bleaches hair yellow y , so if there was no blood would it stain the tested material yellow y? How about if there was blood, would it stain the clothing/object blue?

I always wonder about this when ever I watch CSI, and insight would be good (I love CSI, but I hate Horatio in CSI Miami).

Also, some things are more stain resistant than others, so what sort of things would the luminol stain. Would the stains come out in the wash (I don’t think those sort of stains count as stains, AFAI care, a stain is a spot that doesn’t come out in the wash) or would you have to pre treat the clothing?

One more little question. If it does stain, who pays for teh damage. The police department, or the indiviual, or the indivual’s insurance? Does it matter if the person is guilty or innocent? Would the cops spray luminol on something valuable like an old tapestry? Thanks

Luminol (3-aminophthalhydrazide) is an off white powder. It doesn’t stain. It might turn slightly yellow upon reacting, but nothing to worry about. Weak Hydrogen peroxide by itself will not stain or bleach most materials. All bets are off the investigators add fluorescein or some other fluorescent compound to the mix in order to increase brightness. Some of those stain badly.

Also, peroxide doesn’t turn hair yellow because it turns things yellow. It turns hair yellow because it bleaches, or turns things lighter. Lightening brown hair will make it blonde, which is like very light brown.

If you “peroxided” something dark blue, you’d get light blue. If you bleach something off white, you get white.
