This is one of the few sites I like to use that doesn’t feature the bane of computer society - the pop up. Can we assume that when we go to subscriptions, that we can continue to enjoy this?
From what I gather, there’s two kinds of advertisers on the Web: The kind that don’t want us, and the kind that we don’t want them. Most of those annoying pop-up ads are for either porn or online gambling, and the administration has stated they don’t want either on this site. If they did, then we’d have them now. As for more wholesome advertisers, with non-Java banners… Well, if you know of any willing to pay for ads here, have them contact the Reader.
I don’t get the Chicago Reader, but if it’s like the local free paper that carries Cecil, it has dozens of dubious ads for all sorts of XXX stuff and links to gambling sites, plus come-on “business opportunities” for the gullible.
I hate pop up windows! Luckily I found a free download that prevents them. Try this link:

It will prevent windows from popping up automatically. If you legitimately want to open up a new window, or allow a window to open, you need to hold the Shift or Control key. Pretty simple. I’ve run this program for about a month, and it seems to work without glitches.
What a godsend you are!
My previous pop-up-stopper didn’t allow clicking on thread links on the board, which open a new window, so I had to disble it.
This new one seems perfect.
Yeah, the only thing is actually remembering to hit the control button. I managed to get used to it though.
Then again, it’s only a matter of time before those clever advertisers find a way to overcome this program. I guess I’ll just enjoy it while it lasts…
Anyone have any idea if there’s a similar program for Opera? I’m gonna download the pop up stopper for IE anyway, because about half of the pop-ups I get are Gozilla opening IE windows over Opera.
Have you been to Amazon.com or The Sci-Fi Channel or even The Internet Movie Database lately? They have continued the use of pop-ups for credit cards and such.
Yahoo is also getting into using pop-ups more & more, well at least their advertisers are anyways. About a year ago you’d almost never see these on Yahoo, lately I get pop-ups on about 1 in every 4 articles I open there.
