Does private citizen trump remain an influential political figure or does he go away?

This CNN opinion piece says he ain’t going away:

I feel differently.

  • trump is facing a world of legal and financial problems-- hundreds of millions worth of loans coming due, SDNY investigations that he can’t pardon away, not to mention I anticipate the dam breaking on all the corrupt activities he was up to while in office.
  • Without having the office of President, I don’t think his army of supporters will stick around. There’s rumors he might start a trump News Network, but he’s too undisciplined in his messaging for that to work I think. When he was President, he had a lot of supporters who honed and polished his spastic rants and incoherent grievances into a more coherent “America First” platform. He won’t have that to the same degree.
  • I think there’s a good chance that losing the election will break him. He will stew and rant until it damages his health, either mentally, physically, or most likely both. He’s already an unhealthy 74 year old who has been rumored to have had mini-strokes. I don’t think he will handle being a 1-term President well at all.

trumpism, on the other hand, is a whole different story. This has been said plenty before, and I think it will be a real danger to our Democracy in the future: now that trump has exposed just how much a president can get away with without any personal restraints, morals or integrity, someone may come along with the same ambition and lack of integrity, only much, much more intelligent and skillful in wielding that power. Someone like a President Mitch McConnell. No, I don’t think he will ruin for President. Just someone like him for example.

He’ll never go away until he’s dead.

He will be Rush Limbaugh on steroids. He will start up his own network so he doesn’t have to answer to anyone. Doubt if he sits in front of a mic all day, he has enough lackeys to do that but there are many ways he can grab ratings and headlines.

Keep eating the KFC Donald, lots of it and don’t skimp on the mashed potatoes and gravy with biscuits please. Enjoy.

Let me just clarify my position–no, I don’t think he will go away willingly, but I don’t think he will be able to maintain his level of adulation from his followers and influence over the Repub party. He will keep ranting to whoever will listen, but I think fewer and fewer will listen. As trump himself would say, nobody likes a loser.

He’s going to get into the endorsement business. Running in a Republican Senate primary? Pony up $500,000, kiss the Donald’s ring, and bingo you’re on the November ballot. He’ll have a price list for each type of office from State Rep all the way to US Senate.

Trump’s going to have problems. He’s big now because he’s the President of the United States. But a former president has a much smaller presence. How often do you see Bill Clinton or George W. Bush in the news?

I feel Trump will have a hard time adjusting downwards to his impending level of diminished fame. He won’t have Air Force One and motorcades and a staff of hundreds of people and he is going to desperately miss all of it. I feel he will burn through a substantial portion of whatever money he’s managed to pocket in the last four years trying to maintain the lifestyle.

This is a good capsule summary of what I think (hope?).

It’s a management problem. Trump has said that he is the TEAM, There isn’t anybody else. His inability to form a government attests to the truth of his statement. He’s the top guy and he is incompetent. So, without the structure and protection of government he is likely to self destruct.

However, were he to attract a skilled manager and a small educated staff he could be a major force. The right organization could attract names like Palin and Limbaugh. A Trump, Palin, Limbaugh organization could eliminate Hannity, Levin et al and ultimately eclipse Fox.

He had the potential to have all that and blew it in favor of his own ego.

True, but he may be approached by a group that only needs his name. That’s the business he is in. They manage the organization and he does the fun stuff.

Imagine a line up where Glenn Beck and Palin are considered intellectuals.

Love Trump or hate Trump, he has his following. He lost an election where he should have been annihilated but was competitive to the end.

He’ll resurface as an outspoken critic anytime Biden farts in the bathtub and causes a stink.

My wife and I were talking about similar things. Imagine a political world where George W and Palin are a HUGE step UP.

They, could follow the MSNBC pattern of using personalities to feed markets. Get Jones for the drooling troglodytes, Palin/Beck for the home folks and Limbaugh/Trump for the statesmen.

This is a good point. trump was mostly trading on just licensing his name before he became president. Now his name brand has pivoted from “ostentatious luxury” to “far-right grievance politics”. I could see a “TNN” rise up, with trump acting as no more than brand name and mascot; occasionally allowed to call in and rant for a little while now and then.
