Does the Board's mission matter anymore?

So, if I’m reading you correctly, you’re saying they’d make nice pets? I agree, though we may quibble on the “adorable” part. My cats are adorable…and they don’t have funny teeth. :slightly_smiling_face:

I quickly realized I was way overmatched, so now I just roll with it.

Hey, at least I didn’t make the obvious “in poor taste” joke here.

Me. For one.

Thank you

(That means I got 2 votes.
Me and Me.
Me +Me=winner)

I came here expressly to get my ignorance fought. It’s taking y’all longer than I thought.

This board is not politicized. Unless you think it is.

Remember, that this is an international board. We’ve got Americans, sure; but we’ve also got Canadians, Israelis, South Africans, Australians, New Zealanders, and UKers posting. None of whom have a dog in the US presidential race, neither Republican nor Democrat. But while we may be shouted down elsewhere, we have a voice here. That’s important, as I firmly believe that Americans need to hear what folks beyond America’s borders think and feel about America.

Here, we fight ignorance. Too many Americans are ignorant about the world and their place in it. If we can fight their ignorance, then let’s do it.

We fight ignorance, and yes, it is taking longer than we thought.

Nicely stated, @Spoons

Thank you, @Beckdawrek .

It’s compliments like that, that make me proud to be a Doper. Thank you again!

No. It doesn’t.

(Although it does qualify you to play in the Welsh football* team !)

*That’s real football, not that rugby variant you play over there !

Hear, hear !

Starting at a young age they teach all their women to speak like Mary Poppins. Dont you don’t find that adorable too? And they make such good domestics too, just comes naturally to them I suppose.

This post had me laughing out loud this morning. I enjoyed it very much. I also enjoyed the post by spoons.

I’ve definitely had my ignorance fought more times than I can count. But that’s not all we’re good for.

We have recipes, jokes and companionship (of a sort), just to name a few.

I’d hate it if the dope went away. No matter the mission now.

When a politician can kick off his term by presenting “alternative facts”, and retain the unwavering support of an entire political party, fighting ignorance is forced to be political.

Good luck with that when remaining ignorant lets you be comfortably numb.

I thought this Board’s mission was keeping Unca Cecil from having to work a 9 to 5 job.

So there never was a mission, thus nothing was taking longer than anybody thought. Still gonna come here to learn things anyway. Anybody done learning need not feel they have to be here for any reason.

This sounds right from my Zen page-a-day calendar!

See, ignorance isn’t always a bad thing…

Downright blissful, when it comes to “vinegar eels”

I take issue at this last part. Let me add to your history. In the early 2000s the forum got more hits than Wikipedia. Because Wikipedia didn’t exist. In the early 2000s the forum got more hits than Quora. Because Quora didn’t exist.

Since then, the Dope has been deprecated by Google several times, to the point where the search engine isn’t even capable of doing a great job of searching through this website’s infinity scrolling. During the oughts the board’s mission was something observed in the breach, but it was observed. People used to routinely join the board after submitting a general google search. That’s pretty rare now, right?

I’ve come and gone here for extended periods of time. Activity has certainly declined over the past few years. Today, the board is less tumultuous, more homogeneous, and frankly older. I don’t have a good answer to the OP other than a shrug and a note that there’s still a lot of internet out there to explore.

I came here for GQ (not FQ in those days). It was a busy place. But not nearly as busy as MPSIMS, which, as far as I could see, was the locus of the community, especially the ones that shifted over from AOL. It also seemed to be a cesspool, worse than a middle school lunchroom, with cliques and factions and hatreds and snark boards set up to hate on the cool crowd and the mean girls. It’s taken me twenty years to get past that and feel like I could share a personal detail without being attacked. Impressions on what the “Board” was or is like are going to be individual.

I still see SDMB threads come in at the top of Google searches, though. I don’t know if Google puts them there for me because it knows my history. Strange if true.
