What is the Mission of the SDope?

I would like the Admins (Mods) who WE PAY to have the privledge to be so holy explain what they see as the mission of the Straightdope, specifically General Questions? And, what the paying customer is paying the SD for? Maybe I have a method in the madness for my questions, and maybe the Mods should have respect to their paying customer as long as the questions do not involve anything illegal?

More method less madness, please.

And seriously - you’ve been here for 12 years, and you STILL have no idea that the mods/admins aren’t paid?

Munch, you’re just a guest. Hmm, is that there a method to madness as to why you don’t pay to be a SDoper?

As far as anyone can tell, your “method” mostly involves being very angry about things that you can Google.

Yes - it’s free to be a Doper. People who pay do so out of no delusion of getting special treatment. Except you, obviously.

You’re aware that Google is free as well, right?

I outrank you and my method is to pay half price for full value.

As for the mission, read the banner at the top of the page. You don’t even have to Google it.

As a wise man said: “And seriously - you’ve been here for 12 years, and you STILL have no idea that the mods/admins aren’t paid?”

Is that better? Your BS about paid member is just as bad as the BS questions. As a “Charter” Member, I’d be happier if the Admin/Mods let your question just swing in the wind unanswered. Do I have more clout?

  1. Message board staffers are not paid. (Unless you count the coffee mug.)

  2. It is their mission to moderate the postings on this board. To keep spam off the board, to enforce the rules in the registration agreement, to adjudicate disputes.

  3. Paying members do not see ads on the board. They get more private messaging space. They are first in line for consideration of things/they get first glimpse of new stuff. They also have the knowledge that by their financial support they help keep this site and what is offered available and going forward.

The mission of the Dope is fighting ignorance. And part of that mission includes telling you to use Google or Wikipedia to search for those answers you could easily find yourself. It’s not a one-way street. You have to take an active part of your own. Most people ask their questions here after being unsuccessful in finding answers of their own. Or they want expansion on those answers they could find. But at least they make an effort first. You learn more by finding your own answers than by having information spoon-fed to you.

IMO, the Staff here has been way to lenient with you over your years and years of poorly thought out questions. You have way more GQ OPs than anyone else on this site, if not damn near. How much of the resource, that we all have to share, do you think you should get for yourself?

I’m not buying this.

What about the bribes, the kickbacks (from Goggle no less), the chocolate and sexual flavors?

:stuck_out_tongue:

“Just a guest.” Hmph.

I don’t pay for Doperhood simply because Ed won’t dump the Paypal. I’m sure the mods get a kickback from that, too.

Bring 'em on!

Sexual flavor? That’s my favorite kind of chocolate!!!

Goggle?

They do nothing.

Amen.

Here’s a Pit post i made about this precise issue just a few days back. The mods and admins know that Jinx posts plenty of really lame GQ OPs, they have cautioned Jinx multiple times about it over the years, and yet have never (as far as i can tell) issued Jinx an actual warning for ignoring mod instructions.

As far as i can tell, the OP actually gets special treatment around here.

Serious question because I really don’t know, doesn’t the click-through revenue balance out for those of us who are not paying members?

I think it’s only fair to consider method/madness as a ratio. If you’ve got a whole heap of method, you can afford a little more madness.
