for all of the problems we’ve had, with paying customers no less, if he had worked for another company, wouldn’t he be out on the street trying to suck dick for a living, and when that “crashed”, he would be licking ketchup from discarded hot dog wrappers for nourishment?
I don’t even know the guy, but several other BBs on the net operate without paid subscriptions and do better. I have tried to give my money away for the last week to update my subscription. I just want posting with no ads.
Is the trick that I have to let him blow me? Is that what he is into? Is money not the primary motivation?
Maybe he wants me to bang his girlfriend while he cornholes…well, damn, this board isn’t that great…
WTF is up with this fucking nonsense. Thousands of subscribers. A guy with credit card in hand waiting to pay. What do I have to do?
He’s got a legitimate point. I use quite a few different message boards, both pay and free, and none of them has anywhere near the technical problems this one does.
Your timing for complaining about board performance is poor, seeing as we just got some new upgrades and at least for me the board is working better than ever.
Chill, numbnuts. They just got the board migrated to a brandy-new server and fully upgraded to the latest vBulletin software, they’re still tweaking this-and-that to optimize performance and they haven’t gotten around to enabling the subscription system yet; I’m not even aware that they’ve finalized a price structure yet.
No he doesn’t. As has been explained in the (conservative estimate) 4,594 threads covering this ground already, running the SDMB isn’t Jerry’s job. He does technical… something or other for the Reader, and this is sort of a side duty which he gets to whenever he’s got time.
If the OP wants to pit the Reader and/or Creative Loafing for not hiring an admin specifically for this board, he can have at it. Pitting Jerry is like pitting the cashier at a supermarket because their prices are too high.
Anyway, you’d have to be completely retarded or something to miss the fact that we just got a server upgrade and updated software, which is what we’ve all been asking for.
Numbnuts…what a fucking joke. Did you miss the part about how I am waiting to give SDMB money and they won’t take it? What business does that?
A new price structure? That is news to everyone. The ads all say that a regular subscription is still $15.
In any event, why does the IT staff on this board get fucking six months, or longer, to “optimize” things that are already optimized behind the scenes on free sites?
jt, if you promise to go away and stop bothering Jerry, I’ll pay your toll. Honest. Just STFU about it for a week or so, then IM me when the system is reset to accept subscriptions. Or would you rather bitch?
Yeah, the board is not Jerry’s full-time job. I’m not sure it’s even a part-time job. It’s most likely, barely an extra duty. That tells me most of what I need to know about this place. It is a labor of love, more than anything. Ads and paid subscriptions do not mean the place does not continue to exist more from generosity and love than from some executive thinking this is a hot internet money making opportunity.
Well that is not quite fair either. The dope needs to make money and like most places the IT staff (IE Jerry) need to get it done yesterday. Sadly, I am sure he has 12 other projects that need to be done yesterday also and of course his normal troubleshooting needs. Thankfully last weekend they finally put the Dope upgrade at the top of his need it yesterday list. I would bet money that some salesguy or AR clerk was whining to Jerry about getting something fix last week when he was tied up troublshooting the hell out of the dope.
But the Dope is not a labor of love at this point and I doubt it ever was for Jerry. For **Ed **and **TubaDiva **sure, but not for Jerry I would think.
Er. No. I’ve fucked up plenty of computer systems - everyone who has ever programmed / administered / was generally responsible for one of them has. And guess what, it takes as long as it takes to fix it. Unlike most jobs, demanding that something on a computer be fixed this second has fuck all to do with whether or not it can be done. If companies fired everyone that has ever had to put off a lower priority fix for a week or two (or twelve), they wouldn’t have anyone to do any of the work.
My current assignment is to write SQL queries running daily to monitor major issues so that they can be fixed manually before they hurt anyone’s account. I’m doing this full time at the moment because this particular client currently has more that 400 known issues, and has no available resources to fix any of them until the current major projects are finished in November. I’m sure that the three people affected by cosmetic issue #162 are unhappy to have to wait, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re going to have to.
Before your payment is accepted, you must first prove your worth to the SDMB. Think of the SDMB not accepting your money as a rejection of you as a person.
A business that has a business model which doesn’t primarily depend on revenue generated by subscriptions but rather by advertising.
They only reason they’re offering subscriptions at all is to placate those of us who really, really don’t want to look at advertising. They’d prefer, I’m sure, everyone saw ads and they not have to deal with subs at all.
I can see how accepting your $15 is not they’re highest priority.
Um, anyone disagreeing with the OP is clearly a fucking idiot.
I’ve consulted for many companies who accepted credit cards over the Internet for some reason or another. During any site deployment, the number one priority was to get the site up and accessible to the public. The second priority is making sure the credit card system is working. Any bug fixes, cosmetic changes, performance enhancement, etc., comes AFTER the second priority.
Jesus Christ, people here will argue ANYTHING just to see their own words.
Dudley, you are missing a big point. The Dope’s business model is not to make money on subscriptions. So it is not a priority now under the new business model.
