Where I live its called Keys Please, they come to the pub, 2 people, and drive you and your vehicle back to your house (followed by second person in second vehicle to take driver away).
From the local pub it’s about $13 to my house, cab fare alone is about $8, so an extra five dollars. It’s a good deal!
And they are pretty cool, I hear, they’ll stop so you can buy smokes, or pick up a pizza or drop off your drunken mates (as long as it’s nearby!).
They are doing a good business and don’t look to be going out of business anytime soon!
They have it here in Calgary, and I’m sure other major cities in Canada. The one I’ve heard of is http://www.mydesignateddriver.com/. I’ve used them once, and it was about as much as a taxi would cost, and they were there promptly. It’s a great idea, and many people used these services for weddings and other events.
That exact scooter service exists here in Boulder.
There’s a small shack on the west end of the Pearl Street mall. A trained and paid designated driver hoists a small fold-up gas powered scooter into your trunk, drives you and as many passengers as can be safely fit into your car home, drops your car off in your driveway, and hops onto the scooter to get back to the shack. I’ll try to find a web-link, but the service has been around 18 months and was still going strong as of two weekends ago.
