Does this person look unhealthy?

One of my favorite actors has put on some weight in recent years. A lot of people don’t like that, but I’ve been defending him on the grounds that he might be at the correct weight for him, and I don’t think it makes him unattractive.

But yesterday I was watching this interview, and something jumped out as me as unhealthy. Check out 2:59, where he leans his head back and laughs. That does not look like the neck of a healthy person! It makes me think he might have a thyroid condition, or gout or something. If it’s not against the medical-advice policy, can anyone comment? Thanks in advance.

(I had been taking a break from the board, but I’m coming back briefly for this. I don’t have time to scope out other boards and find one where I can be confident of getting fact-based opinions from multiple people. I know I can get that here!)

I see sick people.

IANAD, but he looks like many, many overweight people I’ve seen. I wonder if it’s some sort of malnourishment factor going on. Some people I know eat so much junk, I wonder how they survived into their 40s.

Nothing that jumps out at me. For the very little it is worth. Nothing fact based to base it on.

As a big proponent of inspection as part of the physical exam (and as someone who teaches it daily), it looks okay to me.

I think the contrast in lighting when he suddenly extends his neck so you see his can pale skin and not the dark beard, may be influencing your interpretation.

I don’t see a goiter, if that’s what you’re asking. But a goiter is pretty far down the path of impaired thyroid. You can have nodules or an enlarged thyroid without having a goiter visible from a distance.

I can’t provide a cite because I’ve no idea where I read it. I was just web-surfing. But I seem to recall that he had to gain weight for the role he is playing. ymmv Despite the beard, he still has his kid face.

He kinda reminds you of Fat Mac doesn’t he.

I don’t know about unhealthy, I just think he looks rather pudgy.

Joey P: Hee! Rob McElhenney said the reason he chose HJO to play him was that he was on a plane and another passenger was convinced that he was HJO. Kept insisting until he showed his ID.

Whatever4, it’s probably true that he had to gain some weight for Yoga Hosers. But he’s been plumping up steadily for about three years. KarlGauss, you’re right too, but lighting alone does not create the illusion of bloat if it’s not there at all.

WhyNot: goiter, yeah, that’s the word I was looking for. If you don’t see one, then okay. Ditto DSeid. AncientHumanoid, I just hope he’s not sick. If not, then it’s good. I’m a bit of a chubby-chaser, and I think one of the reasons I like this new, different HJO while others don’t is that he’s starting to look a bit like my husband. (Except for coloring. Oh, and height.)

On preview: jz78817, I’d call him plump. But I don’t think he has much choice. He can be skinny and out of proportion, or he can be a genteel Gimli. Thing is, he’s always had a big head, broad shoulders and a big ass (which I surmise is all or mostly muscle, since it was like that even when he was thin) and then he’s so damned short. So if he’s thin, he looks like a lollipop. When he started bulking up, he looked like an adult. Not everyone’s ideal man, but a man nonetheless.

More people with short necks.

Ok I feel dirty after even opening that link. WTF?

Appears to be semi-deranged anti-Semitic horse hockey (to quote Colonel Potter) - my “favorite” was Tim Berners-Lee:

Can’t cure stupid…

Holy shit what an absurd site.

And that gap in the front teeth? Diastema. It can be caused by tongue thrust issues, mouth tissue issues, and whatever the genetic thing where the sides of your face do not form correctly [the mildest form is also a cleft chin] Absolutely nothing to do with being jewish or neanderthal. My brother is neither jewish nor neanderthal, he got his via tongue thrust issues and had it fixed with braces.

Yeah, Isilder, what the heck.

Did not click the link but I am Jewish and 2.5% Neanderthal. Been tested!

Yeah. I think (a little) pudgy kind of works for him.

This explains much.
