"Does this skin make me look fat?": overweight reptiles

Have you ever seen a snake doing chin-ups in the gym? Neither have I.

Do reptiles ever become obese? Mammals certainly get overweight, but I think we’ve got more padding to begin with. I, for one, have never seen a pamphlet in the vet’s office about the ideal weight of a ball python. How would you treat a lizard with love handles, anyway? Send it to some ectothermic Weight Watchers [insert joke about scales here]? [del]Need answer fast.[/del]

Can’t speak about pythons, but I used to keep iguanas and they absolutely can become overweight.

Yup, they do. A quick google search on the terms ‘obesity’ and ‘reptiles’ turns up a bunch of hits on how to not overfeed your reptile of choice.

Frex, while corn snakes apparently don’t tend to overeat, you’ll get the occasional one that does. The sign of an overweight snake is going to be visible skin between scales, fat lines whatever those are, and an inability to coil properly.

The following link is an article on overfeeding reptiles and how to prevent such.
