So juvenile, but what else is there to do? Ignore him? Try to reason with the Kardashian obsessed American voting public that doesn’t seem to give a damn about any of his asinine behavior?
We could have separate threads on this board for his stupid policy of the day, stupid statement of the day and flip-flop of the day and still not cover all the bad stuff.
Most importantly, in my lifetime no American presidential candidate ever been so Hitler-like. Is he a Fascist? Probably not. But he’s a pretty good imitation of one.
I’ll say it again: the only slightly palatable thing Donald Trump offers as a candidate is the impotent fury he stirs in the Left. “But… that’s insensitive! He’s supposed to cower and apologize, and then talk about the Very Real Problems facing Native Americans!”
Now, the joy I feel at seeing this reaction is somewhat tempered by the realization that Trump will be a disaster and I am voting for Hillary Clinton, which a year ago I would have given excellent betting odds against.
Still, life is hard, and one must take joy where one finds it.
Far be it from me to Godwinize anything, which I just think I did, but… The Pocahontas “thing” never would’ve arisen if Warren hadn’t claimed Native American heritage, which she had no right to do, IIRC. I’d have changed my name from Drumpf as well. There are plenty of other names to call The Donald, let’s make a list, shall we?
Is there an evidence that she has no Native American heritage?
If she has any, why is she not NA under the “one drop” rule?
That was the gold standard in regards to African-Americans and those who wanted to discriminate against as many as possible.
There is no hard evidence either way. Of course, “absence of evidence” kind of applies both ways, depending how you look at it.
She is definitely not a member of any federally-recognized tribe. She is from Oklahoma, which is full of people of various degrees of Native, especially Cherokee, ancestry. There is no direct evidence of any particular ancestor of hers being Cherokee (though there was some confusion on this point for a while), but there is evidence that the story of Cherokee ancestry existed in earlier generations of her family.
So, she didn’t make it up, but she did perpetuate the claim.
Which is it, “slightly palatable” or “joy?” In any case, I suppose it’s similar to the slightly palatable joy I find in calling you a witless blowhard.
This Atlantic article from 2012 seems to have a good summary on the controversy.
Peremensoe has mentioned some of the main points. Here’s a summary.
-Elizabeth Warren believed she had some Cherokee ancestry based on family legend. She might be 1/32 Cherokee. She’s from Oklahoma, so might plausibly have some Cherokee ancestry. However, this has not been confirmed by a link to any named ancestor who was clearly identified as Cherokee. Whatever the case, she would not be eligible to be a member of any Cherokee tribe.
-On the other hand, there is no evidence that she ever took any advantage of supposed minority status to gain a job or other preference. She sometimes indicated that she had Native American ancestry, and allowed Harvard to mention it as well, but as far as she knew that was correct.
I would say it’s a bit more than that, since she didn’t just claim NA ancestry, she claimed NA ethnicity. I agree that it does not appear to have been an attempt to gain some advantage, but it seems like an odd thing to do: “I know I’m mostly white, and I think I might have some NA ancestry, so I’ll list myself as Native American.”
IIRC, she never used that background to gain advantage. I think I’ve read that a 1/16 background is required to claim Native American heritage and she was only 1/32.
I’m not 1/32nd anything, but my great-grandkids would be 1/32 Swedish. IMO, they have a right to claim that. Not that it matters at all.
Ethnicity, at least partial ethnicity, would be an easier case to make, since it doesn’t require actual ancestry. From the article:
My understanding is she grew up in a part of Oklahoma with a strong Native American presence, believing herself to be partially Native American. So she could have some claim to Native American ethnicity even if she didn’t have a drop of Cherokee blood.
She grew up in Oklahoma City, 3.5% NA. Also, while her being from OK is often mentioned as given some credence to NA ancestry, that would only be true if she had deep family roots in that state. However, none of her 4 grandparents was born in OK.
The usual media script is that a person slightly mis-speaks something and then they must make a public apology in the next few days for the next news cycle. It is not only expected, but required. Donald says outrageous things and does not apologize.
It leaves the news media aghast and continuing to talk about the issue for days, giving Trump free media exposure for no cost. He is playing the news people, and they keep playing.
It really doesn’t matter what Trump says during this campaign period. The Hillary Hate is high and it is not just the Bernie people. Her lack of any kind of excitement, charisma, or message, just plays along with Trump’s campaign.
Trump will continue to say what he wants, he won’t play the media’s game, they will play his. And I will work.
