Does your dog have a Kong?

http://www.kongcompany.com

I had never heard of these rubber toys that slightly resemble a snowman, but apparently they’ve been around a while. Like the “chuckit,” I’m suddenly seeing them everywhere.

Dogs go nuts for these things. I guess they are used for fun and/or training.

Anyway, I know I sound like an advert, but I really would love to hear about your dog and the Kong. I don’t have a dog, but I bought one for my brother’s dog (we’re very close…the dog and I…well, and my brother) and I can’t wait to see if he likes it.

One question I do have…how does a dog get peanut butter out of those things??

Yes - they are the only toy my two shepherds cannot destroy (I think it’s the Super Kong - Mega Kong?) They love it. It looks like a Michelin man and doesn’t bounce in any particular pattern - it goes everywhere.

Not sure about the peanut butter thing; I’ve put biskies in there & it really does keep them occupied. :stuck_out_tongue:

I got my dog one of the soft blue ones made for puppies. He didn’t seem to enjoy it no matter what it was stuffed with, so we won’t be upgrading to the kong made for older dogs.

The ArmadilloPup still has his baby Kong. I’m sure it’s technically way too small for him, but he loves it and it’s the only toy he hasn’t yet destroyed. It must be rugged, because it was left here by the last homeowners and their dogs. Two and a half years later it hardly looks worse for the wear.
As for getting peanut butter or soft cheese out of it, how do you think they get it out? They lick and lick and lick and lick and lick and…
That’s the point, it keeps them occupied forever

My parent’s dogs both have kongs and when they want to keep the dogs occupied a dog treat goes into each kong and gets thrown into the yard. It is the only way you can keep them occupied for more than 3 or 4 minutes. They love their kongs more than any other toy (probably because they often have food inside).

I got one after hearing about them here, but my dog just isn’t interested. He loves to chew stuff, he’s never chewed the Kong even with peanut butter in there. He did lick the peanut butter out, that was it. He’s a fairly small dog and the Kong I got might be a little large for his tastes, it’s a dark pink color.

Used to have one. It was great when my dog was young enough to swim in the pond. Good times…

This is the exact model of Kong I used to use to play fetch with my dog. I’ve never even heard of ones you can put food in.

We got two, one for Cocoa, the Yorkie mix, and a bigger one for Daisy, our yellow Lab. Both are the kind you can put treats in, and the dog plays with it to get the food out. Cocoa worried hers for a few minutes, got a few nibbles of food out of it, hasn’t picked it up since. Daisy sniffed hers (with food in it) once or twice and completely ignored it.

Some dogs love 'em, but I think they’re too hard for our pups. Daisy, being a Labrador, has a pretty soft mouth. Cocoa isn’t interested in anything she can’t shred – must be the terrier in her.

We have Kongs for our dogs, they love them and besides raquet balls, they are the only toys they can’t mutilate. I have no ide how they get the peanut butter out but they do. Every last smidgen.

It’s a lot of fun to smear peanut butter in them then toss them in the freezer for an hour or so. Gives the dogs something to obsess over for a while. It’s great when company is over and you don’t want them pestering the folks.

My 60lb lab/border collie mix loves hers. We’ve used both peanut butter and biscuits in hers. We give it to her when we have to leave her at home in her crate, and we use it for fetch occasionally. (She prefers fetching sticks.)

Newton, the 1.6 y.o. Border/Springer mix loves his Kong.

I pack with a peanut butter/kibble mix, and he’ll stay on that thing for a whole 1/2 hour (which is amazing).

In the summer, I’ve filled it with water (after plugging it with something), frozen it, and given Newton a Kong-sicle. It keeps him cool, andworked wonders on his teething.

Great toy, and the only one I’ve seen labelled as “indestructable” that actually is.

Our dogs have several kongs. They usually lose them under the couch eventually. Both dogs are Australian Cattle Dogs and Meg has chewed through a red kong once. I’ll have to upgrade her to the tougher black one. We’ve used the Kong Stuffing - liver flavor squirt can stuff. It seemed expensive at the time but it lasted forever.

I’d never thought of freezing them with goodies inside - I’m going to give that a try.

Yanno I read this as “Does your dong have a cog”
I’m very, very tired

I got this for a Pomeranian, but he never really went for it.

Some dogs don’t. Bean would only play with her Kong until the filling was gone.Sirius and Polaris LOVE the thing. They gnaw on it and I’ve seen both of them use it to play a game I call “Do-It-Yourself-Fetch.” They pick it up and then swing their head to fling it, then chase it as it bobbles and bounces across the floor.

My beagle’s favorite toy is a ball similar to the Bounzer - it bounces all kinds of crazy directions.

We have a bunch of them. Every day before I leave for work, my dog (separation anxiety pretty bad) gets two. One is just stuffed with cream cheese. It’s easy pickins and he can clean it out in 20 minutes. But that keeps him occupied when I first leave the house.

The second kong is stuffed with wet dog food and frozen over night. That keeps him occupied for pretty much the rest of the day. When I come home, he is pretty much ready to go to sleep for the night because he’s been awake all day unstuffing those kongs.

We tell him that it’s his job to unstuff the kongs. Someone has to do it.

My golden retriever has several. She’s not interested in them unless we put food in them. Then she just gets the food out and brings us the toy and looks pitiful until we put more food into it.

We don’t play with those much anymore. She likes soft squeaky balls.

They make them for parrots. Onan will not go near his.
