You’re doing the right thing. Chin up.
Hugs.
My brother-in-law did. Poor thing had bad hips for years, and had outlived a vet’s prediction by at least 5-6 years. Two days after he had him put to sleep he called my wife (his sister) saying he thought he made a mistake. It’s been about 2 years now and he still sometimes says he wishes he hadn’t done it.
cmosdes, I’m sorry for the pain you will be facing, but rest assured, you are doing the right thing. It’s the last, best, loving act you can do for your dog. Keep in touch with us about it, we’ve all gone through this, or many of us have.
I put my companion of 14 years down in June. Very tough decision. Best wishes and condolences.
It’s very hard but by all means have as many family members as can handle it be with your dog at the end. It’s rough but you will feel so much better after.
The fact that he can no longer go outside to go to the bathroom is bad. If the vet doesn’t see things getting better anytime soon, it’s time.
I’m sorry you’re going through this. Sometimes I wonder if I put down my cat too soon. We suspected cancer, but running all the diagnostic tests was just too expensive. But she clearly had no quality of life left.
Since Saturday night he hasn’t done any messes in the house, but I think that is mostly because I keep sending him outside about every hour or two.
I wouldn’t call this decision easy, but the input here and things the doctor said made it clear it is the right choice. I’ve known this day was coming for years, so I’ve had time to prepare. It is still hard and there will be sorrow over the next several weeks, just no second guessing.
Thanks for all the support and opinions.
We just had to put down or for month old cat two days ago. He got into an altercation with a dog and had severe head trauma. He was essentially left in a coma. We held him in our arms as the vet administered the drugs. A very sad moment, but it had to be done. I wish you the best of luck. You had many good years with your friend and I’m sure your lab knows you love him.
I just had to make this decision for my own dog a few weeks ago. It’s horrible, we are still missing her physical presence in the house every day. One great suggestion our vet made was to have a little wake, mark the day. Don’t just go home and be sad and try to get through it. So we had a small family dinner and put up a slide show of all our favorite pictures of her and talked and told stories and found a way to smile about what a great thing it was to have had her as part of our family for 14 years.
My heart breaks for you going through this. I’m so sorry.
I’m so very very sorry.
There are people out there who spend thousands of dollars on expensive treatments just to let their pets live another few months. In fact when we took our beloved lab in its what they initially wanted to do. But, I knew the time had come for him to be put down.
You will be glad you did.
