Dog lives

How long does the average cocker spaniel live? My dog is a purebred cocker spaniel and in 77 in ‘dog years’, 11 and a half human years. He’s getting grey under the chin.

Also: He has this thing on the bottom of his front right foot that is sticking out. I think that it is one of his foot pad things that has come loose or something. We’ve taken him to a vet, they said it wasn’t harmful. But he keeps trying to knaw it off. What should we do?

According to http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americancocker.htm you can expect a cocker to live 12-15 years.

Hope this helps.

I’d recommend wrapping his paw in a bandage or putting a bootie on him if he doesn’t go nuts at it. Don’t get anything taken off at his age if the doc says it’s okay. I don’t think the pad would come off…it might just be a chunk of something he stepped in outside. But I wouldn’t let him chew on it. Tell him no, give him a chewie bone or stuffed toy to chew on instead, wrap his paw up if he continues or when you’re unable to watch him. If it is a body part, you don’t want him chewing himself into bleeding bad.

That’s an oversimplification. See Cecil’s column Is it true one “dog year” equal seven “human years”?
