Dog mauls family over sweater.

New dog with unknown history.
Try stuffing him in anything and he squirms and growls so he gets smacked.

Humans need antiseptic mathalade poured on their wounds and the dog needs to be rescued from them.

The bad part is the dog will be put down when it is the people that should be.

lot I need to know before I would punish the dog.

YMMV

Typical mixed breed dog called a ‘pit bull’.

The idea that superficial appearance features could predict canine behavior is so ignorant it’s ironic it persists on this ‘fighting ignorance’ forum. Even if the dog’s breed history were surely known, there is no scientific evidence that aggression toward humans by dogs varies by breed, correcting for human factors. Same goes for the supposed evidence ‘pit bulls’ are less aggressive on average than most dogs (they pass the ATTS test a high rate), doesn’t correct for self selection of which owners have their dogs tested.

The story here seems fairly typical. The people apparently post a sign saying ‘beware of dog’. Then it supposedly proves something about other generally similar looking dogs that this one bit them? That’s almost too ridiculous to believe anyone would say with a straight keyboard, but this is a hysteria, ‘pit bulls’, and by definition results in stupid stuff being said.

My daughter family had a pitbull mix and live in New England and they never had to put a sweater or coat or their dog. There has to more than we know about , the dog could had been abused by the owner and they may had hurt the dog trying to get the damn sweater on the dog . If the owners had half of a brain they could had gotten a jacket for their dog , that is a lot easier to put on a dog . The dog may not like having it head covered up while the sweater was pulled off him. Poor dog , some people shouldn’t have pets period !

That poor dog. He must’ve been so scared with everyone coming at him. I don’t understand putting CLOTHES on animals unless it’s for warmth, and I’d sure be cautious with a dog I’d only had a few weeks. What idiots.

People who have hair still put on hats in the winter.

People are a heck of a lot more likely to to get bitten by an intact male than any other kind of dog, regardless of breed.

I watched the video embedded in the article and that dog was intact. Wherever that dog came from, it wasn’t any facility where he would have been vetted and neutered before being adopted. Unfortunately, dogs like that - passed from one owner to another - usually end up that way because of behavior issues and they go from ignorant owner to ignorant owner with little training and without proper medical prevention such as vaccines and spaying/neutering.

I have an xray somewhere, I can see if I can dig it up if there’s any interest, of a dog that got an 8-inch chef’s knife put up to the hilt in his back. Why? Because his new owner who had him for a couple weeks made a sandwich and the dog decided it should be his. He tried to get it off the counter and when his owner made a grab for it, the dog latched onto his forearm and wouldn’t let go, so the guy stabbed the dog with the knife laying on the counter, that had just been used to cut the sandwich. The dog actually walked into the hospital on his own, but at the time we weren’t a specialty center and didn’t have the kind of surgical team that could have tackled such an injury. He had to be put down and his head sent out for rabies testing since there was no vet history. These dogs could have been the same dog. It’s so sad.

Keeping any animal as a pet is already an unnatural thing, and yet we do it, because it’s fun and enjoyable to keep a pet.

It’s also fun and enjoyable to dress animals up in clothes. Well, until someone loses an eye.

Are you saying that there are no behavioral differences between breeds?

Those dogs have insane strength. A buddy of mine had one and the first time I saw the dog he seemed to instantly like me and I kind of wrestled around with it in the kitchen, he didn’t bite me or get aggressive but just playing with it in a friendly state I was amazed at how much power it had being able to push me, a 230 pound man backwards like I was a sack of potatoes or something. I wouldn’t have wanted to be there if it was in a bad mood.

I’m almost positive the dog has been put down but I can’t seem to find the story about it. I’m sure I read it in the last day or so.

There are differences between dog breeds that are physiological and behavioural - in the latter category, some of that behaviour is probably innate, and some is possibly culturally-imposed by humans (in the sense that Collies are often trained for obedience, Greyhounds for racing, and so on).

The ignorance is twofold;
[ul]
[li]the media has a tendency to lazily call any dog that bites a human a ‘pitbull’, regardless of its actual breeding[/li][li]even if it were true that all recorded attacks on humans were made by actual pitbull-breed dogs, that doesn’t necessarily mean all, most or many pitbull-breed dogs are vicious attackers (inductive fallacy)[/li][/ul]

What is true: any larger, more powerful dog will likely do more damage, if it attacks, than a smaller, less-powerful dog.

If dogs went to movies, that dog’s story would be the Jason Statham movie they’d take dates to.

You’re claiming precognition? :dubious:

I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 100.
What number am I thinking of?

Anyone else think of the old Pluto cartoon when they heard of this story?

You just turned this couple into dog abusers who deserve to be killed. You gave them the death penalty for adopting a vicious animal. This is how your world works? Owning a pet now puts me at risk for summary execution if I do something wrong?

  1. average differences between real breeds are far smaller than the variation among individual dogs

  2. more relevantly wrt the ‘pit bull’ mass hysteria, mixed breed dogs of a certain general appearance, the vast majority of dogs called ‘pit bulls’, are not a ‘breed’.

Justified or not, pitbull-type dogs have a ‘tough’ reputation with less than reputable people. This does result, on average, in more pitbull-type dogs being raised in bad circumstances/not socialized properly. A very sad story, regardless.

And if they watched TV, it would be What Not to Wear.

Leet the Wonder Dog [sup]TM[/sup] always snickers condescendingly at the other dogs at the dog park who are dressed in little sweaters. Being a large, black, fur-bearing critter, he is virtually immune to cold temperatures. He goes out in public dressed as the acme of canine fashion - a collar with his bling (ID tag, dog license, rabies tag) and a bandana in a variety of flattering colors.

He be styling.

I’m sorry. The number was 27.
