Actually, yes, Papillon does relate to the French for butterfly ! Here is a picture of my 2 Papsters. Take a good look at the ears:
They are supposed to look like butterfly wings. The ears are supposed to be colored (black , sable, etc.) and this represents the wings. The properly marked Pap had a white blaze on it’s face, this represents the butterfly’s body. And for show, the whiskers are never trimmed, they represent the butterfly’s legs. There is a drop earred version of the breed as well, called Phalenes, which is French for moth !
Yup, Stonemist, Schujan and Strathmore are the breeders in this case. I have also had Shilo Acres and Shijin Gordon Setters.
TDI is not an actual AKC title, it stands for Therapy Dogs International. TDI is an organization where dogs are registered with them for insurance purposes , and licensed to visit nursing home residents, schools, hospitals, etc, as spirit boosters more than anything. We visited schools and libraries to educate kids on proper dog care.
[QUOTE}What’s a Utility Dog? I have an image of a medium-size brown dog of humble origins getting the paper, getting the mail, fixing things in the garage, bustling around the yard on a fourwheeler hauling bales of hay, etc… [/QUOTE]
Heh… Utility dog is one of the highest advanced obedience titles. The dog works entirely off hand signals , you cannot speak to the dog when competiing. There are different exercises; in one, you send the dog out to the other side of the ring, where the dog runs out and sits, facing you, and thewre are 2 jumps on either side of the ring. The judge tells you which jump to use and you send your dog over that jump. The scent articles are a group of leather and metal articles (12 ? Not sure how many…) laid out in the center of the ring. The owner is given 1 of each, leather & metal , and rubs their hand on it (1 at a time), the judge mixes it in with the others, and the dog is sent out to find by smell which one the owner handled. VERY difficult title to earn…

So terriers were bred to go down holes after things? Makes sense; terre = earth in French. YaWanna, you mention that terriers were bred relatively recently. Presumably people used cats for this duty earlier? Did the terrier breed’s creation have anything to do with middle-age prejudice against cats?
[/QUOTE}
I am not a Terrier expert, with them being my least favorite type of dog (Sorry if you are Terrier fans…) But I believe that many of the Terrier breeds have been around for several hundred years. You are correct, they were bred to ‘go to ground’, hunting rats, mice and other vermin. Believe me… Terriers will face down critters that cats would quiver in terror from :D.
:dubious: Hmmm… this one I have no answer for .
