The Offical Dog Show(s) thread.

Tonight, I am watching the Eukanuba National Championships. right now they are on the Working Breed.

So far, I cannot decide. I’m partial to German Shepards.
When the terrier winner ( Rufus: the colored bull terrier, took the #1 terrier, I nearly cried. I like to see the underdog’s (ha) get the spotlite over the more popular breeds.) The minute I saw him, I thought he might have it. I’ve been keen on this breed for a few months.

Tomorrow, head to head, is the Westminster Championships & Eukanuba Agility Championships. AIGHHHHHHHHHHH! I could possibly implode from it all!
It’s just so much fun watching these shows Despite the fact that there are homeless dogs blah blah blah. Mutts are better yada yada yada…and the poodle nearly mostly always wins. Please see my Pit Rant about this very subject. Really, it’s the best weekend I’ve had for total BS TV watching in a long time.
Who’s with me?

I enjoy these shows, even though my three dogs are all mutts who were rescued from the streets.

I guess it’s kind of like a happily married man watching a beauty pageant. :stuck_out_tongue:

That is an excellent way to put it.
Eukanuba is now in the Final Round. Time for Best in Show.
Working: Giant Schnauzer

Herding:Old English Sheepdog

NonSporting: Tibetan Spaniel

Sport:Clumber spaniel ? ( or sussex)

Hound: Blood Hound

Terrier: Colored Bull Terrier

Completely Useless: Toy Poodle
I’m really torn. One of our neighbors raises bloodhounds. I’d like to root for this breed, but…the bull terrier and Tibetan spaniel.

Ok, I just love them all.

Except the poodle.

I used to be very fond of Schnauzers. Then our neighbors got one who just won’t stop schnauzing. As soon as they let him out of the house into the yard, he starts to yap. It stirs up my normally-quiet threesome, who seem to find his voice to be very annoying.

Every dog in the neighborhood eventually chimes in.

I think they are all saying “SHUT THE HELL UP” to the Schnauzer. I don’t speak very much of the Puppese language, but that’s what it sounds like to me.

I’ll never feel the same about Schnauzers.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…
The Bloodhound just won!
I am so surprised. Probably moreso than the bloodhound…

Great!!! I love bloodhounds!

Animal Planet is now re-running the show. So I can pick the winner all over again. ( I missed the first half.)

It is funny how the other dogs in your neighborhood ganged up on the Schnauzer.

I could never own a Schnauzer. Gah. They never shut up. Damn Germans.

Did anyone notice that the commercials for the Westminster show uses “Final Countdown”? I’m hoping for a Gob magic show complete with wind machine and scarves.

Mrs. Plant says it’s a repeat.

Is Mrs. Plant carniverous too? My mind is boggling at the implications of marital relations…
If it is a repeat, then I really missed it. I bet it is, as it is in Tampa and the Westminster is in NYC and my brain was wondering how all these Top Dogs from one place could make it up there…so fast…but I couldn’t focus on it because ooooh look at the widdle pug wif his widdle wiggly butt…awwwwwww.

Mrs. Plant is, sadly, A Dog Person. I on the other hand am into Nepenthes, Saracenia and cats.

She says the white poodle, whose name I forgot, has been retired for some time.

I used to own an Ibizan Hound, and would always look for them in the hound group. So elegant and exotic! Occasionally, I’d see one with a name indicating relation to my Iiko Puppy-Dog Boy. He’s been gone for a year and a half, and I may never have another dog.

It’s my contention that the poodles (and small dogs in general) win overwhelmingly in the AKC championships because the judges are apartment dwelling New Yorkers who don’t have the space for a 30lb and higher dog… so they vote what they know.

First off, as one doesn’t excercise the dog in the apartment, size really doesn’t matter. In fact, larger breeds tend to be self propelled rugs, content with snoozing on the living room floor. I’drather have a berner sennen than a Jack Russel in a studio apartment (I’d never have a JR anyway, since they’re psycho).
Anyway. It’s fun to look at dogs on tv. Buster and I agree on that. He’s very interested whenever a dog is on tv and sits with full attention to the screen. However, dog shows are an abherration(sp?). A dog should be bred for its mentality and health, looks shouldn’t enter it. Problem is, championship dogs tend to have many health defects, which are re-inforced when breeders pick male and female champions. Buster’s breed (boxer) was almost destroyed here from breeding show dogs. Shepherds have a similar problem, where it’s considered nice looking, the more the back slopes towards the hind legs, causing lots of problems with hips and knees.

And poodles (the big uns) are great dogs, as long as they get to work and aren’t pampered with silly styling. If you ever get a chance to play with an unpampered poodle (large size), which is trimmed evenly all over, you’re probably gonna change your mind about the breed. I did.

Another dog show fan checking in. Westminster is doing something new this year. They are streaming the breed judging video online.

Sorry, I don’t know why the “insert link” option isn’t working for me and I’m too foggy headed from the flu to figure it out.

Anyone else notice how often the teenytiniest little dog is handled by the hugest handler?

Yeah, I think this is a requirement by the AKC: The smaller the dog, the more…ah…squishy the handler.

Heh… My Schnauzer hardly ever barks, except for when the doorbell rings. She has a brother who, in his 6 years of age, has never barked. Quiet family, that one.

My pup.
