Well, also he has to save some airtime for the group prayer and for telling each arrested person how he turned his life around and they can too.
I was amazed that this guy has fourteen kids (I think twelve bio and 2 adopted). I wonder how many of them he supported before the success of the TV show.
As much as I loathe him and his nephew, his case reaks of “set-up”.
PS- In response to a couple of people above, I don’t give a damn how Chapman was reared or what company he kept, it doesn’t exonerate him. I know plenty of people brought up by racist parents and who were racist themselves at that point in their lives who got the fuck over it- in fact the South is full of them.
In Stephen Colbert’s book I Am America and So Are You he refers (and I’m paraphrasing heavily) to the value of the extended family because it provides opportunity for dialogue with children on “why it’s alright for old people to use racist words but you shouldn’t”. I’m sure I’m not the only southerner who ever lived in terror that one of his older relatives would start craving Brazil nuts while in a grocery story.
I’m amazed that people are feeling more sympathy towards him after listening to the tape. He sounds like a grade-A asshole.
And if the girlfriend was making threats about wearing a recorder, that means he was being intentionally offensive around her. If some famous guy with a loving fanbase was calling me nigger (or saying nigger in my presence), I’d record his ass too. Unless he has some kind of Tourette’s syndrome, he’s perfectly able to restrain himself. He’s a Christian, right? God doesn’t stop watching you when you get home after a long day’s work. Maybe he’s some other kind of Christian.
I also don’t get what apologizing means in such a situation. “I’m sorry you heard me being an unapologetic racist jerk?”

I’ve only read the article linked - I thought it was clear that she had threatened to record him, and he talks about how it would end up in the Enquirer. Evidently other people didn’t read that into it.
Sampiro, there’s a hilarious bit in the new Fashion SWAT on somethingawful.com about old people making the most embarassing remarks, and how when they go to hell, people call them on it. The Brazil nut thing is actually the example used.
Because it’s not there. And you didn’t frame at your own speculation based on a few vague words, you framed it as though it was a known fact that she had threatened to “wear a wire” and expose him to the Enquirer. You based that on absolutely nothing. All we know about this woman is that she got called a “fucking nigger” by a lowlife. There is no call to accuse her of anything.
The thing that gets me is how much of a House of Cards his entire career has been at this point.
I mean, he knows he’s a racist. He knows that exposure of this will utterly destroy his fame and fortune. And yet, rather than think “Hey, maybe there’s something wrong with my thinking and I should change my behavior”, he continues the behavior even while acknowledging that it will destroy him.
So whatever he wants to think about his downfall, no matter whether or not he thinks that someone betrayed his family or him personally, it was only a matter of time before his racism was exposed and the entire house of cards brought down.
That’s why I love this story. He goes on a rant 1)calls his son’s girlfriend a nigger, presumably pissing his son off, 2)mentions how if someone wanted to screw him over because they were pissed off about him using racial slurs they could make a recording of him doing so and sell it to the Enquirer, 3)records said rant on his pissed off sons answering machine.
So of course, his son turns around and sells the recording to the magazine his father suggested.
Note to self: when leaving a recording thats bound to make someone angry, do not include in that rant instructions for how an angry person could back at me using said recordings.

As for the subject - I don’t think that using the term “nigger” as an element of bad language automatically makes one a racist, any more than using the term “Jesus Christ” as a swearword automatically makes one a blasphemer in the religious sense … of course, that doesn’t mean the fellow isn’t a racist, he could well be. Just that a trash-talking tirade doesn’t prove the fact, particularly where he is, in his own ignorant way, trying to explain that he’s not prejudiced (though of course he may be lying and his tirade is hardly comforting in that respect).
To my mind, the whole episiode illustrates the modern trend towards focusing on trivialities. The guy’s apparently a killer, evidently, who creates a hit show based on sensationalizing his low-life profession … yet his unforegivable transgression was to use the “n-word” while engaged in an angry tirade in private with his son?
To any white person over a certain age, both in Canada and the United States, the first name that jumps to mind for them is “nigger toes”.
I’m a 40 year old Canadian, and I’ve never in my life heard that term. I guess 40 isn’t the required age.

I agree with what Dio was getting at earlier in this thread. I think that it sounds like he really doesn’t like his son dating a black girl because she’s black.
He is lying to his son when he claims that the reason he doesn’t want her around is because they frequently say “nigger” and that could cause a problem.
He clearly doesn’t want his daughter dating a black guy.
