Why does my dog enjoy sticking her head out the window so much? Is it that the car is moving so fast, the breeze, or something else?
Just wondering, because she insists on sitting on my lap so thatshe can look out my window, and it has gotten to be quite an issue the past couple weeks.
A dog’s primary sense is their sense of smell. Vision is of course important to them but they get tons of info via their noses.
My guess is by sticking their nose out a window they get a rush of smells to sample. It’s the doggie equivalent of MTV for humans (a barrage of images that seemingly never last more than 3 seconds).
Oddly enough my dog is indifferent about car rides. She’s happy to go just because she is with us instead of being left at home but once in the car she mostly just lies down in the back seat and stays there. Even when I roll down the back windows for her she rarely gets up to check out what’s going on and seems mostly bored by the whole thing when she does. Every other dog I have had in the past has been an absolute freak about getting a car ride so I don’t know what’s up with this one.
So, is that the best guess I am going to get about this… Doesn’t anyone else want to know? am I destined to a life of ignorance on this subject? Help me out! I am desperate to know… This question is eating awayu at my soul.
Most dogs I’ve known love sticking their faces out of car windows. But it appears that dogs can have different preferences as in NameBright - Coming Soon
Google groups has a discussion but the URL was too long to put here & it wouldn’t work in the preview mode.
Maybe ask your veterinarian? I never asked because as a dog lover, you enjoy seeing your dog enjoy him or herself. Uh, except when it comes to licking the icing off the cake, or trying to eat chocolate, or jumping on the forbidden couch…
