Dogs dogs everywhere

There is a city law here that pitbulls have to be in an enclosure with a cement bottom and a roof if they are within city limits. My neighbor has a pitbull that he has tied up outside in his yard. He has a privacy fence, but the fence is falling apart so when his dog gets loose, she comes into my yard.

I’m not afraid of her, she’s very sweet but huge. She’s torn my clothes from jumping up on me, and when I let my dog out to use the bathroom I have to drag her back in the house because my dog isn’t very friendly with other dogs. My husband has had to go into their yard to tie her back up when she’s come loose many many times. Two days ago, she broke the cable she is hooked onto and the neighbors weren’t home. We got a huge extension cord of ours and tied her back up. We didn’t want her running loose in the neighborhood, not everyone is as nice as we are.

She got loose, again, on Sunday. We have a pen in our yard that we put our dog in at times, so we put her in the pen and left a note on their door stating where she was. When we got back home later that day she was back in their yard this time he has her on a chain. Maybe that will hold her.

Now there’s another dog running around in the neighborhood. This one is also a pitbull, but very small right now. This new dog has taken up with the pitbull next door which he/she accesses through our yard. This new dog has no collar, and I have no idea where it came from. I’m having the same problem, can’t let my dog out to use the bathroom because she isn’t friendly with other dogs. This dog won’t leave my yard. Everytime I let my dog out, this new dog comes running over and well, I have to drag my dog back in the house.

I don’t know what to do, really. I don’t want to call the pound because I don’t know their rules as far as euthanizing and especially because this new dog is a pitbull. I wish people would stop getting dogs if they can’t take care of them.

I don’t know what you can do other than calling the pound. It’s not your fault that someone else is irresponsible, and it’s not fair to your dog. I can’t see another choice.

I know you’re right. And I keep thinking about this new dog maybe being a boy. And how maybe he’ll knock up the dog next door one day and I’ll have puppies to worry about then. My husband wants to try to find a home for it, but he works 6 days a week so I don’t see that happening.

I understand why you don’t want to call the pound, but you might want to check around and see if there is a Pit Bull rescue organization or another “generic” no-kill shelter that could pick up the young interloper. As FairyChatMom said, it’s not fair to your dog to have restricted access to the yard. It could even be dangerous should the dogs get into a scrap since you don’t know if the stray has been immunized.

Sounds like a fence would solve some of your problems as well. Any chance of you (or your landlord, if applicable) installing one?

I don’t even know how to begin looking up those kind of shelters. I live in a really small town. As for the fence, no. My yard isn’t really set up for that as it’s our yard/driveway. I seriously doubt my landlord would do that anyway.

Everywhere I live animals seem to be attracted to our home. Our animals are strays, and there are cats constantly in our yard. When a dog gets loose, it’s our yard it goes to. Every house I’ve lived in. It’s not like we’re the only house for miles. Sigh.
