I hereby pit the dumbasses who like to dress their dogs in clothing. What the fuck is that shit all about, huh? Out on the street just now I saw a dog in a blue sweater, cap, and little booties being carried around like an accessory by some noveau-riche priss…for some reason it just pissed me off:
(a Mad Magazine cartoon that I remember from my youth)
“The Lighter Side of…Pet Owners”
(Woman opens the door during a dinner party. Her dog, dressed as a clown, runs out the door)
Woman: Oh, no! Come back!
(Phone rings in the police station)
Cop 1: Hello?
Woman: My dog ran away!
Cop 1: What does he look like?
Woman: He was wearing a shiny clown jumpsuit and pointy hat. Please help!
Cop 1: No problem, lady. (hangs up).
Cop 2: Who was that?
Cop 1: Some drunk.
If God wanted dogs to wear clothing he would have given them all discount cards for The Gap.
So you’re telling me a small short-haired breed dog that I had, wasn’t supposed to be dressed for the wintertime when we went out for a walk?
She had a full body coat and boots put on her whenever I walked her out in the freezing cold and mucked up sidewalks. I cared about her enough to take precautions to keep her from being too cold and get her from walking painfree from the salt scattered on people’s sidewalks and driveways.
How exactly does this effect you in any way? I loved her and wanted her to be comfortable. Again does this piss you off that I loved my dog enough to keep her safe?
I agree the people that are overly affectionate with their pets are crazy but not all dog clothes are made to be prissy little show-off type bullshit. It amazes me when i see dogs that have their hair dyed, but clothes for practical uses isn’t cosmetic bullshit.
I’m sort of with the OP, mostly. Clothing canines seems a really stupid thing to do. But I also understand that many people have dogs nowadays who have body shapes/fur coverings that are totally unsuited to the climes wherein they live.
Centuries (millenia?) of breeding have now given us doggies who cannot survive without human carers. I see Malamutes and Old English Sheepdogs living in areas where the summer temps regularly get to over 40c, and scrawny little terriers with little fur who hang out in the mountain regions where the temps don’t get over 0c for weeks on end.
Firstly, people are stupid when it comes to picking a dog breed that will acclimatise to their area.
Secondly, people who dress their doggies up in their favourite football team colours are the stupidest of the lot.
Honestly, even most shorthairs won’t be harmed if they go outside even int he winter even in the north. Let them run around a bit and they’ll warm right up.
Are you taking her out, soaking wet, in subzero weather every single night for upwards of an hour or two? I mean, come on, your dog might shiver a little, but take her out to do her business and then bring her back in to your warm house and she’ll be fine. Shit, I’ve had shorthaired dogs of my own who never wore sweaters during their winter walks and everything was fine. How come yours is supposedly weaker than mine, huh??
I’m pretty sure that most of these dogs wearing sweaters only do so because their owners dress them up due to the “cuteness factor.”
