When I see people like Paris Hilton, with their little dogs dressed in designer outfits, it makes me cringe. I saw a girl lastweek, with a Chihuahua wearing a mini skirt, tube top and feather boa!
OTOH, dogs wearing wooly sweaters to walk or play during cold weather is both cute and practical. Except my dog, put a sweater on him and he looks like you tried to beat him. That is, if you can see him, Hint : He’ll be under the table.
But if I had a more willing model, I think I’d be dressing him all the time, and making little sweaters. I told my husband to intervene if it looks like I’m tempted to adopt a little Foo-Foo dog. Because, I’m not a Foo-Foo dog person and the only motive would be little sweaters.
Funny I should come across this thread today. Yesterday, I was out at the mall doing a few errands and popped into a store that was selling pet accesories, but were closing down due to lack of sales. I picked up a little witch hat and cape (for halloween) for my cat. When I got home and put it on her, she was one pissed off pussy. But it was soooooooo cute on her. She also has a little piggy outfit that I got a couple of months ago, and she looks absolutely adorable in it.
Anyway, my way of thinking is…
Dressing the pets up once in a while in funny clothes is cute, but not when they are wearing sparkly sweaters all the time.
Personally I would pay money to see your geckos dressed up. Seriously… how cute would THAT be??
I have pictures somewhere of a little white mouse I used to have wearing a tiny little cowboy hat and bandana, sitting in the saddle of one of my model horses. It was so frickin’ adorable!
'Kay, I’ll try. The turtles would bite me. The day gecko doesn’t like to be handled and would probably crawl under the fridge anyway. But Picante, the leopard gecko, doesn’t mind being handled at all, so maybe I’ll try him.
My coworker’s partner always dresses up her dog. They have a Yorkie, which is like 5 pounds, three of which is head. And it’s got these big mournful eyes, so it always looks really pathetic.
Aside: The little doggie has leg problems, too, so she (the partner) wants to get him a doggie stroller. My coworker confides to me that the dog eats wheels and can’t be allowed near children on strollers because of this. She has no idea how he’ll deal with it in his own stroller.
I make my kitties wear collars (just a regular cat safety collar with an ID tag), but otherwise don’t try to put clothes on them. But I don’t give treats to naked kitties- if they get out of their collars (which they sometimes do), they have to let me put the collar back on first.
My dog wears sweaters when it’s really really cold. We have to keep her fur reasonably short, so that it doesn’t tangle too badly (she’s one of those long-haired dogs, and despite constant grooming, still gets knots), so we want to make sure she’s warm. She doesn’t mind it too much, as long as there are no straps around her back legs.
My dog has a large chest and small hips. So she suffers from the same problems women with that shape do (tops and bottoms never fit right!)
We went to her first halloween party when she was young and she grew out of her costume between the time I bought it and the time she wore it. Her second halloween party I put her in a woman’s XXL baby-tee and a little girl’s cheerleader skirt. Her third halloween I tried to make a costume and failed miserably. Dunno if we’ll try this year.
I don’t try to dress her up elsewise…it’s just way too expensive and there’s a good chance she won’t like it.
On the other hand…she likes to steal the do-rags off my head and run away with them, and she’ll let me tie it on her like a babushka. She digs the babushka.
She’ll also let me put a person’s safety vest on her when we walk in the dark. She’s too excited about walking to care that she’s wearing a vest.
Golden retrievers are too cute on their own to dress up, anyway
Every other Easter or so The New York Times’ pictures of Easter parade participants include a bonneted kitty cat with a look of sheer murderous rage on its face.
My puppy has sweaters/coats for when we’re outside in the winter-time. Since we’re in Ohio she gets pretty chilly when it’s cold out.
She also has a halloween outfit, mostly because my nephew and I were at the local Target and he saw it and thought she should get it, but other than that, nah.
She is cute, and I don’t think the little clothes could make her any moreso…
No clothes for our pets. I have considered getting a sweater and some booties for the dog to use in cold weather when he goes outside though. Poor thing doesn’t like the cold very much and shivers a lot. Once when I took him out he stood there on three legs looking at me as if to say,“Are you out of your f-ing mind? It’s 10 below out here!” Then he just fell down in the snow like he had given up and was now ready to die. I had to carry the fat bastard in the house.
When I lived in Hollywood, the dog would wear his Halloween camoflage fatigues once a year and a simple, yet tasteful red bandana the rest of the time.
I’ve never tried to dress the cats. It’d require Kevlar gauntlets.
