Do you dress your pet?

My dogs like to ride in my sidecar.

The older, shorter haired one tends to get cold.

It’s a real problem trying to find a functional (vs. fasionable) jacket that will keep the wind off him.

Well. Kind of. Our dog is a Smooth Fox Terrier and he has pretty sparce fur – especially on his undercarriage. So he gets cold in the winter. He’s also built kind of funny – he’s very deep chested for his size – so regular dog sweaters don’t fit him well. I find that a toddler tee-shirt (sized 24-month) fits him perfectly. He has one with little trains on it, and one with stripes that we call his ‘Bobby Brady shirt,’ and one with Clifford the Big Red Dog on it.

I’ve also been known to put clothes on him just to mess with him – like a pair of my daughter’s panties or a scarf tied like a babuska – why do dogs look so cute in babuskas, anyway?

Oh, and he did used to have a Halloween costume – a little dog-sized grass skirt and lei. He looked ridiculously cute in it, but he hated it so bad my husband threw it away.

When I had pugs, I bought a little Santa hat that was held on by an elastic chin strap. I put it on my stoutest, butchest pug girl, and the hat pushed her wrinkles down into her face so that she gave the impression of an angry, glowering little Santa grinch. Not that she was actually pissed off; on the contrary, anything which made her the center of attention was okay with her!

Okay, I’ll cop to this. I’ve got a male Maltese that I stud out. He often wears a tiny black tshirt that reads “Bitches love me”. A bit crass, I know, but at between $500 - $800 a pop for his services, my tiny canine gigolo can wear whatever he wants.

The wife likes to dress the cats for holiday pictures. Both the cats and I think this is silly, but we do it because we love her. Pixel does look cute wearing a Santa hat, I must admit.

I’d wish you had a picture of that. I love pugs – they are so darned cute. Did you find they had nice temperments?

That’s a cute shirt. Maybe I’ll have one made for Max. Except it’ll say: “Bitches love me… Too bad my parents had me fixed.”

My cat tends to attract bows around her neck near Christmas. Since she is used to collars and harnesses, she’s fine with them.

Look for the Green Bow in this insanely cute picture of my cat.

Our cat wears bow ties, or the cat version of a bow tie. It’s like a soft fabric collar with a bow tie attached. I was a little surprised he took to them so well, because the previous attempt at kitty clothing was hats, which was NOT successful. Here he is wearing his Buffalo Bills bow tie.

The lady that grooms my cocker spaniel used to send him home with yarn pom-poms on his ears, and he loved it. Now he gets a bandana and he loves it too. I take it personaly since the sweater incident.

He also doesn’t run for the safest corner when she tries to bathe or clip him. :frowning:

Where would one look for Hallowe’en outfits for a very small (6 pounds) dog? It’s just that I love Hallowe’en so, and for Puppy School, one night is going to be Costume Night? Pet stores? Wal*Mart?

Pet stores will have them. You can also find real easy patterns at Wal Mart or a fabric store.

I can’t believe that it took until post # 21 to get the first pic!

Guilty smile I used to dress my cats up in my doll’s clothes when I was little.

Nope. We tried it with the beast once. It was a T-Shirt that came in the bag of Purina (it was for a person but he’s the size of a person so we tried.) That experiment went badly for both the dog and the human involved. I however, laughed my ass off. I’m mean that way.

My SIL has a very minature doberman named Dozer. In the winter he gets to wear a sweater when he goes outside (winter is quite cold in WI). He looks very fancy in his sweater and my SIL always refers to him as Dozier (doze air) while he’s wearing it. Not my thing, but it is pretty cute.

It is an insult to doggy dignity. Beagles are very aware of their dignity. I tried to get one of my beages to switch to a harness for walking. It was war. He acted like I was tring to cripple him and laid on his back and screamed like he was in pain. He won.

Nah, both bros have been able to dress themselves for years…

oh, you mean the other kind, the ones whose doc is called a vet!

Dressing up a canary sounds like cruelty. I can see putting a sweater on a dog if it’s cold, but I’ve seen many people who had a sweater-bearing dog in an ultra-hot shopping mall and the poor dogs’ tongues couldn’t have gotten any longer.

When we were in NYC we saw some people filming a commercial or whatever. The model had a pink-dyed pom-pom dog (hey, they are French poodles only if they haven’t been pom-pommed and dyed!) We all agreed that should count as cruelty to animals.

If the parrot ever bites all the way through the air conditioner power wire, I will consider a simple bread dressing, perhaps chestnut.

I just got one of those sale e-mails from PetSmart a little while ago, and it had “New dog pajamas!”

New dog pajamas.

Meaning, there are people who, when it’s time to go to bed, turn off the lights, brush their teeth, and take their dog out of their day clothes and put their jammies on them.

My friend has a Cornish Rex cat, one of the wrinkly-skinned fur-free variety. She wouldn’t stoop to the depths of actually dressing the cat, but he did find his way into a very woolly scarf one day. She photographed him with it round his neck and I have to say he does look quite fetching.

If it was my cat, I think I’d be visiting the local casualty dept before she let me get anywhere near putting a ridiculous outfit on her.
