…not that I’m in the habit of dressing up my dog. Dressing down, yes, because she deserves it so often.
I mentioned in some thread last week (just in passing, not worth searching for) that my idiot Dalmatian, AKA Pixel, escaped from the yard, got into it with a wandering German shepherd, and got a couple of bites on her butt and shoulder. Her butt appears to have healed just fine, but the boo-boos on her shoulder have been subjected to scratching and repeated bleeding. I tried bandaging, but she always managed to defeat the wraps and the tape.
My daughter had an old tank top that we put on the dog, but it was too big and idiot Dalmatian still managed to worry the shoulder wound. So yesterday, I made my way to WalMart to the kids’ department. There on the clearance rack were tank tops - $2 each. The first ones I saw were bright orange - appropriate with Halloween approaching, I guess, but not my first choice. So I picked a couple of grey ones.
They have to be put on so that the front is on her back, but they give her freedom of movement and fit snugly. We put her harness over the shirt to further reduce the scratch potential, plus she’s sentenced to be chained in the yard to prevent more escapes. (Don’t fret, she has access to the porch, the grass, and the doggie door into the basement.)
So there you have it - Pixel the not-so-fashionable wears Garanimals tank tops. Does that earn me “Mundanity du Jour”?
You should have gone with the orange. Just my opinion.
My little sister has a baby sleeper she made into a winter coat for her dog. (Her dog is an Italian Greyhound (the freak) and it gets cold around here in the Winter.)
-Rue. (who meant the dog is a freak, my sister is just a bit odd)
Possibly. But it is only after you spend entirely too much time sewing your dog a dress outfit that you earn the coveted “You’re a freak of a dog owner” award.

bobkitty - that award goes to my sister. She adopted a greyhound - Max - and she dresses him up on a regular basis. He’s won several costume contests - most recently as a scarecrow (scaredog?)… I’m wondering if this is redirected motherliness, as sis is 36, unmarried, and childless. Or maybe she’s just nuts.
As for Pixel, ain’t no way I’m taking her near any store, not even the ones that welcome pets. I have too much regard for my fellow shoppers.
Doggy Garanimals? Just be sure you don’t match up two “Cats”, otherwise additional shenanigans may ensue.
I have two greyhounds, and maybe it’s just that they are more tolerant of it than most breeds, but the people who have them seem to just love dressing them up. My husband can’t stand it - when we go to the fundraiser picnics a lot of greyhound adoption groups hold, he runs shrieking when the costumes come out. My friend has a bumblebee costume for her large black hound, and someone else I know via a listserv just made some straw hats for hers. There are pictures on the Web, but … they’re just too painful to look at. I can’t bring myself to post the url.
But, we have had to put clothes on our hounds for practical purposes, just like FairyChatMom has done for Pixel. Socks to protect cuts on the feet, T-shirts for chest and shoulder incisions after surgery, and our JC even had the ultimate indignity of having to wear a pair of jogging shorts with a hole cut for his tail when he had a growth removed from his flank. He really wanted to get at those stitches, so we made him wear the shorts. He took it well, but if I ever showed anyone the pictures I took, I know things would never be the same between us again ;). After that incident, I bought him a K9 Topcoat:

Yeah, OK, it still looks silly as hell, but it keeps him from picking at stitches.
I considered putting a sock on the foot that was doing all the scratching, but there’s no way that would last. Not to mention the uckiness of the sock as she walks thru the yard and drags yard uck into the house on the sock. No, the shirt seems to do just fine, so far.
I confess, I did think about dressing up both beasties to sit outside with me while I give out goodies on Halloween, but I’m thinking they’d probably not get into the spirit of the evening and I don’t need them scaring the little 'uns in the neighborhood.
