Joss-y dialog! We have trademark Joss Whedon dialog, and it’s the people infected by the drug who are mostly spouting it.
Dewitt is really cute when she’s high.
Inappropriate starches!!!
In 1966, Star Trek ran the episode “The Naked Time,” about a drug that lowered inhibitions and was spread by contact. The show is often credited for helping turn Star Trek into a phenomenon, mainly by the scene where Spock cried.
In 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation ran the episode, “The Naked Now,” about a drug that lowered inhibitions and was spread by contact. It was an attempt to recreate the success of “The Naked Time.”
Now, Dollhouse runs the episode “Echoes,” about a drug that lowered inhibitions and was spread by contact.
Coincidence?
In any case, Dollhouse is really starting to take off.
Heh. Who among us has not said, at one time or another, “I find lentils completely incomprehensible”?
Ok, so I found the premise of all these dolls, drug-wacked extras and security types wandering around a busy campus without the slightest notice from other students, or the university administration, preposterous in the extreme, but the backstory involving how Caroline ended up in the Dollhouse was cleverly integrated into the plot, and there were some really great bits from the actors playing Dominic and DeWitt, among others.
It seemed pretty clear from the end promo that events that most people would have thought would take place in the season-ender are coming next week. At this point, therefore, I’ve gotta say I’ve no frickin’ clue where this show is going after that, but I kinda like it that way.
If we follow the progression, the next notable example of this trope is due to arrive in the year 2032.
However, less trivially, I would say that none of these episodes are really about the drug - in all three cases, it’s a plot device. What the stories are ABOUT is what we learn about the characters in such an unusual situation, with their social masks stripped away.
And, to repeat one of Joss’ best quotes about Firefly: “You take people, you put them on a journey. You give them peril, you find out who they really are. If there’s any kind of fiction better than that, I don’t know what it is.”
I think that after a bit of wandering around to start with, we’re definitely underway.
Heh. Does Dominic actually have a conscience? Interesting.
Interesting, as he has a character in the episode “War Stories” speak almost exactly the second sentence of that quote to Mal and Wash as he prepares to torture them mercilessly.
Ah, Whedon dialogue, how I’ve missed you. Sure, previous episodes gave us a taste here and there, but this episode was veritably steeped in it. I hope the show can keep it up in future episodes.
I’m getting more and more curious about what brought Sierra and Victor to the Dollhouse.
I think I missed last week’s thread and didn’t post, but I’m happy to see one for this week It’s nice to see people are sticking around for the show.
This was one of the best eps so far, imho. I did find it a bit cliche that Echo/Caroline finds her way into the Dollhouse via an animal rights activist threadline, but I speculate that after disappearing from the hospital, she goes on a bit of a tear against the corporation. The preview of next weeks episode leaves me hopfeful that my initial prediction that the show would devolve the dollhouse into the big bad post haste appears to be coming to fruition, which pleases me to a great degree. I also found this one of the most “joss” of all the episodes.
Also, good news from Fox, for those who haven’t got it - they’ve committed to airing all thirteen episodes. Baby steps towards a renewal? Hopefully we’ll see a post-BSG spike in viewers to make this happen.
I really, really love this show and want it back next year.
Man, I had given up on this show after the vault ep. I was bored at work yesterday and read last week’s thread, and decided to give it another chance. Was underwhelmed.
They really don’t seem to have any idea how they are using that asian doll - Sienna? And I loved it when the black guy and Echo were planning to sneak out of the treatment facility - and ended up just getting up and walking out the door - after which one of them said “That worked!” Reminded me about how in the vault all they needed to do was stroll out the door in the middle of a firefight.
The whole “foundry” bit was painfully obvious to anyone who even noticed a sewer cover. And I loved it when they were in the tunnel and Echo said “We follow the red pipe” - yeah, to the ladder which is maybe a whole 10 feet further down the tunnel.
Just seems way sloppier than I remember Joss’ previous shows. A shame that even Eliza’s stems on constant display can’t keep my interest.
Still have last week’s ep on DVR - thought of watching it to see if the fighting was as good as folk have said. But I imagine I’ll FF thru much of the rest.
Loved it when
Dichen Lachman is Aussie/Nepalese, fwiw, and the name is “Sierra”. These are all the words you use to avoid confusion when giving call letters - international radiotelephony spelling alphabet:
Alpha
Bravo
Charlie
Delta
Echo
Foxtrot
Golf
Hotel
India
Juliet
Kilo
Lima
Mike
November
Oscar
Papa
Quebec
Romeo
Sierra
Tango
Uniform
Victor
Whiskey
X-ray
Yankee
Zulu
So I’m hoping we get to see a Foxtrot and a Romeo at some point. I don’t know who would play Mr. Zulu.
Foxtrot was mentioned in this episode in passing. I can’t remember the context, but we figured it was to clue anyone in who was still in the dark about the naming scheme.
Also, DeWitt & Topher referred to Mellie as November.
Wonder if the new doll will be zulu.
I thought I might have heard a Foxtrot, but can’t imagine the name without envisioning this guy.
I was pretty much bored through this week. I kept wanting to fastforward.
A random aside: I do wish they would give that girl some sensible shoes. It just makes no sense to have her running on high heals all the time.
Another: I usually don’t like a woman in white stockings, but Eliza really pulls it off.
If it doesn’t get better, I think I’ll be taking it off my weekly record list. It is OK, but not great.
Makes perfect sense for a prostitute IMHO.
Someone called Sierra “Taffy”. Speaking of which, the whole “wearing comfy shoes” comment aside, the Taffy personna would have been a whole lot less memorable without the thigh-high high-heeled boots.
Too obv. Maybe Mike.
