Dolly Parton Vs. Whitney Houston

Who wins the “I Will Always Love You” prize?

Dolly all the way. Fuck that smarmy Whitney version. Dolly fuckin’ CRIES, man! It’s deep. I love that song when she sings it. When I hear Whitney’s version I want to blow chunks.

Jesus. Why even ask? Would you rather have an ice-cream cone or a punch in the nose?

Who is this Whitney Houston person?

Hey!!!

I LOVE Whitney. I vote for her. I found her version to be very raw yet eloquent, while Dolly’s smacked of smarminess.

Please take into consideration that I am a pure-bred child of the 80’s and I wanted to be Whitney for about, hmmm, 75% if my adolescence. Still…I really cannot stand Dolly and her watermelon boobs, let alone her whiny voice.

One vote for Whitney!

I cringe everytime i hear Whiney slaughter that song.

I have always enjoyed Dolly’s version.

I am not a C&W fan in general either.

Dolly. As a general rule, I dislike C&W, but I do like Dolly. She has a lovely, pure, sweet voice.

Dolly Dolly Dolly DOLLY! I love her version. To her it wasn’t just words set to music. She MEANT that song, (at the time she wrote it) It was her HEART.
If I even got into what I thought of Whitney Houston I’d have to start a thread in the Pit.

My vote is for Dolly - her version is much more touching.

For those of you not yet convinced that Whitney Houston is pure evil, I suggest renting “The Bodyguard”.

Dolly gets my vote on this one. A much, MUCH better version. Sara, Whitney’s version sounded RAW to you? C’mon, they must have pulled out every friggin’ echo device on the planet to get her faint, thin voice to sound any good during those long notes. Terrifyingly bad.

And to leave you all in COMPLETE horror, I will share with you a song that I was unfortunate enough to catch the other day. I was paralysed with fear and nausea, and could not switch to another channel. It was like watching a train crash in a burning tunnel. That got flooded. Twice. With locusts. Whatever, it was terrible:

Mariah Carey’s version of Phil Collins’ Against All Odds.

The f*cking humanity.

Dolly.

Everytime I hear IWALY ( not to be confused with daWally)on the radio by Whitney-I-Don’t-Have-A-Drug-Problem-And-My-Husband-Is-Just-Misunderstood, I think that Dolly is getting some more money in the bank.

What I would like to hear is William Shatner do a cover of this song. Wouldn’t that just be a riot?

Dolly, of course.
But Leanne Rimes does a pretty decent rendition, too.

I will always love you,
TN*Hippie

Whitney could no more come up with a convincing cover of “Stairway to Heaven” as she did for this song.

Whitney’s okay, but I too am glad Dolly probably got big $$ for her (whitney’s) version.

Dolly’s got a version out on one of her greatest hits albums with Vince Gill. I thought it would f*ck it up, making it a duet, but it works.

Now that I have admitted to owning a Dolly Parton album to all of you, I will have to kill you.

I can’t believe you people! Like her or not, Whitney has a fantastic voice. Yes, she might over-emote a bit, but who doesn’t? Dolly’s quivering, shrill voice actually hurts my head. She has NOTHING on Whitney.

(sidebar) However, I love “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”. Great movie/musical. Much better than “The Bodyguard”. (/sidebar)

Lemmy Kilmister doesn’t, for example.

It’s kind of hard to overemote a scream.
Actually I’m sitting here giggling imagining a Motorhead cover of “I Will Always Love You”. oh, and the answer to the original question is Dolly in a Landslide. All I can hear when Whitney sings is her saying to herself "Damm, girl I got a good voice and I’ll oversing the s**t out of this song (Where’s the drugs).

Keith

Blatant Hijack:

A friend and me once came up with a great idea: a cover of GnR’s November Rain. Ozzy would sing the lead, and Lemmy would be the background choir.

Ozzy, in diabolical fashion: “When I look in to your eyes, I can see a love restrained…”
Lemmy, at full volume: “AAaaaaaaaaahhhhhh aaaaaahhhh aaaahahahhhh !!!”

Think about it. That would rock

I!!! will ALWAYS!!!..LOVE…you!!! (imagine it a half beat off the melody, and you’ve got it)

BTW, I’ve gotta go with Dolly on this one.
