domestic water pumps

I’m going to have to replace the shallow well jet pump damaged in the ice storm. What reccommendations are there for submersibles vs. above ground?
Thanks.

Guess it depends upon what you’ve already got and how much you want to spend.

One of our local,Wisc,Ill,Ia, farm stores advertise a 4"submersible pump for 1/2 hp $269.00 to 3/4 hp $309.00.It doesn’t say what the head pressure is.

They also have two jet pumps for 1/2hp $169.00 to 3/4hp $229.00. They say high capacities and more pressure for shallow wells.

With the submersible you have to run the wire down the well casing. It also must be 4".

I replaced ours with a like jet pump except I went to a 1 horse motor and only paid $260.00. I did the work myself. We have a unique problem since we have to pump water up hill and about 1/4 mile.
Hope this is what you are looking for

I was wondering about maintenance. I had to tear it down, replace a gasket and clean out muck. Sitting there for a week without power and being dry wasn’t good for it. If it were a submersible, I’d only have to worry about ice in the tank.

Just before thanksgiving our jet pump quit. It had a small piece of rust which jammed the impeller. I tore it apart and in doing so tore the gasket. I made one but it didn’t work well so I took it to the local well driller. He fixed it and only charged me for the gasket, something like six bucks.
Can’t promise it won’t cost you more but …
As far as keeping the pressure tank warm if your pump is near it you can do both at once.
My landlord was smart enough to build a pump house that is well insulated and air tight. This thing must have 4" of styrene in the side walls. When I’m down there I can hear mice in the walls so someday I’ll have problems but we’ve lived here 11 years and no problems yet.
We heat it in the winter and have an backup heat lamp if for some reason the milkhouse heater doesn’t come on.
Several years ago we lost power so I took a metal bucket with some charcoal in it down there. I lit the charcoal and let it burn until the power returned. I set the bucket on a couple of bricks .It is still down there waiting .

good luck
