Don Cherry (Hockey)

Great tweet and photo from Jagmeet Singh:

"Don, let me introduce you to “#youpeople

My great grandfather, Hira Singh, who served in WW1 & WW2 under the British."

Hopefully no one, It seems like a good time to let coaches corner go. It’s time and trying to replace Don would be a huge problem for a large percentage of Canadians. Find some up and coming person with a voice and give them their own thing.

I happen to be biased against Don Cherry as I worked in proximity to him (not on his show, in the building) for a while and found him to be a huge jerk (Ron is great). Good riddance.

I couldn’t believe he was still on TV. Does he just really like giving out his outdated opinions (which were outdated 20 years ago) that he hadn’t retired yet? Or does he need the money to buy a new suit every day?

George Stroumboulopoulos?

I’ll show myself out…

Tim Tebow.

The intermissions are filled with ex hockey players and coaches pontificating about the game. Let’s do something different - I’ve always liked Hockey Day In Canada… let’s have features about hockey’s role in communities, the minor leagues, amateur hockey, kids hockey, the NHL players reaching out to the communities with pro bono and charity work.

There’s more to this game other than billionaire owners with millionaire players on their salary.

Wrapped-in-the-flag, chickenhawk assholes aren’t something I associate with Canada. I feel like I recognize this guy but the last hockey game I watched was the U.S. over Finland, 4-2. Did he cover the Olympics?

He’s my fashion idol. Not the ridiculous jackets that he has custom made from fabric he picks out, but I love his high collared shirts. I wish I could find them.

I like to watch his commentary. I never played the game and don’t know much about the x’s and o’s, but sometimes he’ll show a replay and I’ll think “so that’s how they set that shot up”. The game goes so fast it’s hard for people like me to see how it works but there are times where he makes me feel like I understand a little more than I did before the segment.

He’s also a bombastic old coot but he’s like the uncle who’s a little behind the times but tells a great story.

Unless you happen to be the kind of people he doesn’t like; then you’re the subject of abuse. Plenty of people tell great stories without being assholes.

As others have said, this HAS been a long time coming. For years, Cherry (and MacLean, for that matter) were great at providing some insight into the game but even that input has waned over the last decade or more.

My peeve was actually not with Cherry but the masses who blindly agreed with absolutely everything he says. As a hockey player, parent, coach, and fan, I began to realize that you needed to filter almost everything he said to “You kids, out there…”. His brand of hockey is long gone and his politics even older.

That said, I do wish he’d ended his career on a different note and retired years ago.

I can see it now! Mats’ Corner… brought to you by … Campbell’s Chunky Soup!

<Mats’ Mom>“MATS! Did you eat your Chunky Soup!”<Mat’s Mom>

…wish I could find video link :frowning:

Fabricland files for bankruptcy after biggest customer fired from Coach’s Corner

One rule in life is that you can find assholes anywhere.

If only he read Partiallyclips.

(Took me about 15 minutes to track that down, too.)

Ever crossed the border into Canada? They seem to identify all of their natural-born jerks early, then send them to there to work.

Canadians working at the border = assholes.

Everybody on the other side of those jerks = great!
(Or perhaps it’s a clever ploy to make everyone else in Canada seem like not so much of a dick. In any case, it works. ;))

Works for Americans as well.

Quite honestly, this isn’t a joke.

I’m honestly surprised we have a reputation for being nice, considering first contact would be a border guard. I easily run into the most trouble coming back home.

I’ve never had a problem driving to or from Canada.

Actually, we have a reputation for being “polite”… this does not automatically translate to “nice” or “friendly”.

So I’m not the only one who has issues at the border. Phew, that makes me feel better.
