Donald Duck's popularity in Europe.

The only real serious, into-adulthood Donald Duck fanatic among my friends (I’m in NYC) grew up in Italy. We all learned the expression “sgrunt” from him.

A bilingual college buddy could do a remarkable Donald - in both English and French. He said it worked great as a conversation starter in French bars - in the US, not so much.

Interestingly, in at least Poland and Hungary, his stuff actually is dubbed. Search for “Kaczor Donald” or “Donald Kacsa” on Youtube, and you’ll see plenty of examples.

Years ago a friend of mine told me he was reading a biography of Scrooge McDuck. I had no idea there had been an ongoing storyline about these characters for decades.

My brother was a big fan of Disney comics growing up. I wasn’t, but I’d often pick up one of his magazines when I was bored and, from what I remember, Donald Duck was at least as popular as Mickey Mouse. Perhaps even a bit more, because he was funnier. Scrooge McDuck was also very well-known.
