I was just wondering, what will a President Trump mean to the pornography industry, in the United States? And I am not just talking about him personally. (I think he took a pledge to fight porn, which is not surprising. Hillary Clinton voiced her support for the same pledge, although she declined to sign it, because she doesn’t sign pledges.)
I guess what I am talking about mainly, is his judicial appointments. How will ultra-conservative judges like Sam Alito, and Chief Justice Roberts affect the legality, and constitutionality, of pornography, in our great nation? And will it make any difference, ultimately?
Please don’t post links to porn, or relate personal stories you have about the subject:).
As a reasonably intelligent adult male whose politics are a little further left than most, I can tell you that I have no objection to straight porn (or LGBTQ). In my opinion, if two people of any gender combinations who are in full possession of their senses and can make informed decisions about their lives want to have sex, good for them. If they want to sell access (either via website or DVD, or an other media), good for them.
As long as children aren’t involved (or exposed to it), and everyone involved consents, I don’t see why I should have any objection. They’re like professional athletes, in a way: I can do the same thing, just not nearly as well. If they possess a skill that people want to pay them to perform, who am I to say no?
Well, no. You’re treating everyone at either extreme of the left/right political spectrum as a monolithic group, and that’s not really how it works. The Christian right is generally pretty opposed to pornography. So is a lot of the Christian center, and some of the Christian left. But the Christian far right isn’t the only identity on that end of the political spectrum. Neo-Nazis are also far right, but many of them are explicitly anti-Christian (Germanic paganism is still big with some of these people) and don’t necessarily have an objection to pornography.
The far left is even harder to pigeonhole. A white lesbian separatist and a black nationalist are both on the “far left,” but have very little in common with each other beyond that. The former is likely a lot more concerned about “objectification of women” than the latter. The former is also a lot more likely to give a pass to gay porn. But not necessarily trans porn: there’s a really strong, really vicious streak of trans hatred among radical feminists.
To the extent that you can generalize on the subject, people on the right tend to be anti-pornography because of religious morality, while people on the left tend to be anti-pornography out of concerns over exploitation. Someone writing a pornographic story, or drawing pornographic art, is less likely to draw objections from the left, where there’s generally not much concern that someone is being sexually exploited against their will. Whereas people on the right aren’t going to make to much of a distinction between sinful thoughts caused by a photo versus sinful thoughts caused by a drawing. But there are always exceptions, on either side, and in either direction.
Thirded. As a lefty, I think porn is just fine within the usual rules around coercion and what not. Sure, some of it objectifies women, but some objectifies men. I believe the vast majority of adults can separate their fantasies from how they treat real life women (and men).
I’ll go one further. I can see no reason prostitution shouldn’t be legal. Most of the problems with it stem from its connection to the criminal element. When we outlaw other forms of labor that tax the body (carpet installers, concrete cutters) then we can outlaw prostitution.
No one will ever hurt the US Porn Industry, it is what the world thinks of when it thinks of the USA. America is the Arsenal of Pornography, producing more than the rest of the world combined, and that’s never going to change unless pornography vanishes from the face of the earth.
It intersects with many other industries, film, entertainment, hospitality, newspapers, justice, etc. Without constant access to pornography the average worker will willow and droop — it is what church was to 19th century America. And with a bit of effort, doubling the amount of pornography consumed, that would lead to stakhanovite exponential output from America’s economy.
Apart from American * Pornography being a beacon of Freedom, it is also a vital industry, pulling off billions and billions in revenue providing hard work for tens of thousands of highly skilled workers.
So the Supreme Court will side with the profiting Elite, and “No thanks, Mr. Trump: we like things just the way we are.”
And then probably have an orgy.
Actually Mostly California **, same reasons as Hollywood started there.
