Donald Trump and the runup to the 2024 election

Small update: Trump is no longer planning to visit Springfield. Thank goodness-they don’t need that circus.

I mean, he did a fantastic job saying “Barack HUSSEIN Obama” over and over and over again, I’m sure he’d be great at this! /s

Now, that IS a bit of good news! Those folks are suffering enough thanks to him and Vance.

Maybe he’s afraid of being arrested:

good grief… cnn just jumped into a bit of trump’s speech in north carolina. trump just threatened to blow up iran’s largest citys to “smithereens”.

they barely lasted 5ish minutes before they had to jump out.

i should mention this was in response to reports that iran is looking to assasinate trump.

So Trump’s second assassination suspect is going to Cannon’s court. We’ll see how she handles this one.

" Off with their heads!": Queen of Hearts,

There are roughly 97k Ukrainians in PA, to take just one state. This type of talk will not endear him to them, though I hope most of them wouldn’t care for Trump anyway.

Don’t know. But I’m sure it is spelled out in the prenup.

There’s a good article cited below based on a New York Times report that doesn’t really say anything fundamentally new about Trump’s political success, but what it does say is spelled out in unambiguous clarity.

A few snippets:

The success of former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign despite an unlikable running mate, a criminal conviction, million-dollar rulings on sex abuse and fraud, comments belittling Medal of Honor recipients, accusations of a physical fight at Arlington National Cemetery and an ongoing federal court case stemming from his attempt to overturn the 2020 election is not surprising once voters consider his one unique skill, a slate of experts told the New York Times.

… “The real glue holding his coalition together is arguably racial animus and general resentment toward minorities.” … Racism overpowers any hesitancy voters may have about Trump’s various character flaws, among them “mendacity, duplicity, depravity, hypocrisy and venality” …

The article further argues that research shows that support for aggressive politicians willing break all the rules and create chaos “shows that such emotions are rooted in feelings of loneliness and being stuck in your place in the social hierarchy."

In short, Trump’s success appears to be the result of a broken society.

This article doesn’t say too much that’s new (and I’ll admit that I clicked on it mostly for the headline) but it does lay out a good explanation of Trump’s scary promises and which ones he could actually enact.

Thanks for this. It indeed distills what my wife and I have been saying every day for years.

A snippet from the original Times article:

“White men react more aggressively than any other group to perceived status challenges. While white men do not feel highly status-challenged on average, they are more likely to seek chaos when they do.”

I read this as “Republicans in swing states say they see scat signs of groups door-knocking for Trump”

Scat - Animal feces: Scat is a term for the solid or semi-solid waste left behind by animals, especially wild carnivores.

Sounds about right.

So our HOA has a rule against political yard signs. Of course the only yard signs that are showing up are Trump/Vance ones. The HOA manager sent out an email reminding everyone of the rule, and now the Trumpers with signs are all "Fuck you, 'Murica! I’ma put any damn thing i want to in my yard "

My next door neighbor actually has a sign on her front door that says “Fuck Joe and the Ho,” with “fuck” written out with various guns.

These people are nuts. They just want freedom to be assholes, and Trump gives them permission to fight for it.

I know there are other Democrats in the subdivision, we’re just either too respectful of the rules or too nervous of what the assholes might do when they see a Harris/Walz sign.

I believe that violates the 1st Amendment or at the very least is unenforcible in some states.

An HOA isn’t Congress.

Some states have ruled that it’s okay for HOAs to have a rule against political signs; others have ruled just the opposite.

HOA Political Signs – What About the 1st Amendment? | HOAM (hoamanagement.com)

It’s a private agreement voluntarily entered into by the parties. I don’t think it violates the first amendment. Perhaps it would be viewed as void for public policy reasons. Not my area.

An HOA isn’t the government, it’s a private organization. I know plenty of HOAs that have such a rule and enforce it.

It’s not a 1A issue but statutes vary by state. In Texas, state law forbids HOAs from banning political signs within 90 days before Election Day or for 10 days after the election.

But some function as a state agent re: pseudo-city. Therefore depends on how the state structures the HOAs.
