So who is a typical Trump supporter? What about him appeals to people?
All I can think of is the kind of voter that figures, “Someone that rich and powerful must be somebody important, and therefore someone I should support.” The kind of people who supported non-candidates such as Lee Iococca and Chuck Yeager back in the '80s. The kind of people who might be entirely comfortable with the concept of monarchy. The kind of person to whom “success,” however they define that, is very important.
Also, of course, Trump is a bully, and there are those that respond to that. “I want to get on the good side of the scary, angry VIP while I can!”
I think the kind of people Trump appeals to are the same ones that people like Ross Perot and Jesse Ventura appealed to - basically people who are not politically sophisticated or informed and who see somebody who isn’t speaking in conventional, boring political-ese but is just mouthing off like a guy at a bar. That sounds compelling to them because it’s highly simplistic, lacks complexity, nuance or a need for comprehension of issues. There aren’t any big words. It isn’t boring and it sounds (to them) like “common sense.” It’s nothing of the sort, but they like hearing somebody who makes simple, bombastic declarations about what he’s gonna tell China, or how he’s gonna straighten out this economy thing in 2 seconds. They don’t want to hear that anything is difficult. They like to hear a guy saying he’s just going to flip a switch.
There is a very large bloc of people out there who equate “popularity” to “quality.” Cheetos are very popular, but they are not a quality food.
Trump is a total narcissist and liar and has absolutley no intention of running because he would never reveal his financials. But his outbursts generate publicity which brings in more money and on and on. I agree with a previous poster that he is probably worth millions rather than billions. This guy needs money.
It’s amazing to me how spot-on and prescient this five-year old post was.
Funny how Trump was being compared to Cheetos as far back as 2011.
Well, this poster was entirely correct so far as Trump never revealing his financials. None of us guessed that this wouldn’t stop him from running, though, sad to say.
