Donald Trump has been nominated fora Nobel Peace Prize.

Well ‘yes and no.’ You actually nominate an accomplishment. This can have multiple people (up to three). For example Watson, Crick and Wilkins won the prize together for the structure of DNA in 1962 and were probably nominated together – at least Watson and Crick; Wilkins work was separate but related. On the other hand, The prize in Economics in 2013 was also shared by three people, Fama, Hansen, and Shiller. The three of them have never worked together on anything, and I don’t believe any two of them have. I can’t imagine they were nominated together by anyone. I’m sure that was a case of the committee giving it to three people who work in related areas. That seems fairly common for the Economics prize.

Hitler was nominated also. So was Stalin.

(OK, Hitler’s nomination was supposed to be a joke, but Stalin’s name was put forth quite seriously. Twice. For his efforts to end WW II)

He’s often very insightful.

Nominations are due by February each year, so Obama was nominated after having been president for only a month or so. I think even he found it embarrassing to win the Peace Prize that early, but what could he do? Refuse it?

No, a colon.

Nominations are nominations. A nomination is better than not being nominated. However, I believe the winning of such a prize should be based on actually having accomplished something that could actually be considered an extraordinary effort to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people. Giving a speech is not an extraordinary effort. Watching more countries create more nuclear weapons is not an extraordinary effort to prevented nuclear proliferation.

An Obama-type win doesn’t reflect so much on Obama as it does on the judgment of the five Norwegians who awarded the prize to someone they were in love with.

You said if Obama could do it, it must be easy. The implication is that Obama is limited to easy tasks.

Or is that not what you meant? I assumed you were taking a thoughtless ideological jab.

I met a guy who put on his resume that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize. He was a UN Peacekeeper when they were awarded the prize in 1988. Said it was a great talking point in interviews.

For historical reference

Thoughtless?

Trump may have been nominated for a Nobel Peace prize. Obama was nominated for a Nobel Peace prize. Obama actually won one. But Obama didn’t actually manage to accomplish any of things he had talked about that seems to have so impressed the five Norwegian judges.

Does this mean that Obama was actually handed a Nobel prize for participation?

Obviously, Trump has done nothing to deserve a Nobel.

But he’s easily as deserving as Obama was.
