Donald Trump [what will it take to force him to resign?]

The polarization in America is in some ways a defining debate about what America really is. We’re debating how to define this country. Trump’s America is the traditionally exclusive America, one in which everyone in theory has equal opportunity to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but not in reality.

But that’s just business!

He will resign only if he can spin that into a major triumph. But if he loses the next election, he will do that anyway. I only hope we don’t have to physically remove him from the White House with the Jaws of Life.

I was thinking something like this.

How about this? I understand they’re frequently baited with glazed doughnuts, but Big Macs would probably work too.

Yea, The attitude is “I broke into your home but didn’t find anything good to steal so I’m innocent.” double

Any prospect of a primary challenge to Trump? Could a “white knight” (Romney?) run the table?

Why would someone waste time & money challenging a sitting President who has ~85% approval rating among Republicans?

Trump can’t count on his number among Republicans remaining high, particularly if he brings Republicans a combination of economic failures and overseas humiliations.

At some point the major donors–and crucially, the Murdochs–may well believe they are personally better off with Pence in the Oval. When that happens the messaging to Republican voters will change—and not in Trump’s favor.

I suppose someone who opposed the policies, behaviors, ethics, or morals of the President and thought they might be a better choice; someone who believed that not all of that 85% was actually deeply committed to Trump; someone who believed that they could get enough votes in primaries to win the nomination…that someone might have several reasons to spend time and money challenging him and not consider it a waste.

I would say because it’s the right thing to do, but then we’re talking Republicans here.

The SC Republican party has floated the idea of closing their primary. NRC is now rumbling about changing the rules to prevent a primary challenge to Trump this year.

I think a challenger might actually do well, but it seems like Republicans feel like the risk is too great that Trump could be fatally wounded without being defeated.

So, get ready for the bitter cup of schadenfreude that will be Trump’s coronation in a publicly and flagrantly rigged primary.

I have a feeling too many people remember 1976 - while Ford barely got the nomination over Reagan, it may have hurt him just enough for Carter to squeak by in November. They may also realize that, while the primaries weren’t that close, pretty much the same thing happened with Carter and Ted Kennedy on the Democratic side in 1980, although two years of 10% inflation (even Father Guido Sarducci on SNL let him have it with both barrels) did most of the damage.

IIRC, the Reform Party tried to get around this by not revealing the final delegate counts - just by announcing the nominee. That’s not going to fly with the Republicans.

Disclaimer: I didn’t read the whole thread, but wanted to share this.

Now THIS is the sort of thing that might turn thump supporters against him.

A Trump County Confronts the Administration Amid a Rash of Child Cancers

Rolling back regulations —> dead and dying children. That might do it.

I am one of very few people who believes that he would quite likely commit suicide rather than be removed from office. No, I don’t want that to happen either.

Well, he might have a real or pretend medical emergency that requires him to retire to the Trump Tower without Twitter.

But there’s no way he’s leaving by choice. Donald may be a lot of things but he’s not stupid, and his kids have to know Daddy is protecting them from unleashed investigative spotlights.

I kind of doubt your 85% figure, but even if it were true for the Republican electorate, it is decidedly NOT true for elected officials. The majority of Republican elected officials HATE trump. I can easily see them challenging him. Even if the voters disagree with them.

Oh you sweet summer child.

That was a singularly opaque response. Explain, please.

I’m not saying this kind of thing would make thump spontaneously resign. NOTHING will do that.

I’m saying the thump administration’s rollback of specific environmental regulations followed by dead children in specific regions might galvanize the deplorables and MAGAbots to turn against him. Economic woes they can always blame on Obama. The regulation stuff, not so much. And enough deplorables turning against the president could either force him to resign (not very likely) or simply deprive him of voters (more likely).

I wanted to share that tidbit (but I didn’t want to start a whole new thread). This thread seemed like the most current, most appropriate place to do that.

Do you still have questions for me?

Do you really think Trump supports give a shit about someone else’s kids?
