Donating a (possibly) educational collection

Hi all,

I have come into a substantial seashell collection, some of which is painstakingly organized and labeled with scientific detail. Unfortunately because there is no locality data, the museum to which it was bequeathed does not want it.

I’d love to find a good home for this. It seems like it could be a valuable learning tool for a school or similar program but I don’t know the best way to proceed. This is in NYC/NJ but I would be willing to ship if necessary.

Would love some tips and thoughts about how to proceed. Anyone done anything like this before?

I’d call up that museum that was the first intended recipient, and ask to speak to a docent or someone in charge of that department. They may have decent reason to reject it, but I guarantee they’d be a great resource in finding a suitable place for it. Even if they need to pawn that job onto an intern or something, I think you’d get traction.

Also, is the museum public or privately owned? If it’s private, you may want to ask for a referral to a public museum - I bet they’d be more receptive.

That’s a great suggestion, thank you. Someone else suggested contacting the county library system where I live.
