Any advice re: Getting rid of record collections

When I moved in with my SO we combined two substantial and similar record collections. Seems we’re the only ones left in the family with a turntable so we’ve also acquired the collections of my grandparents, my sister, and brother-in-law, as well as a friend.

I don’t want to get rid of all of them, just duplicates and ones we simply will never listen to. Trouble is these aren’t in good enough shape for a true collector. They are scratched, covers are shabby, inner sleeves are missing, etc. If we had a local flea market or swap meet they’d go there, but we don’t. I just can’t see them becoming part of a landfill. Surely someone must want them. Any suggestions of how to find a home for them?

Of course there’s ebay but I thought I’d reserve that for the gems, like the mint condition Village People Live with posters and everything, or my sister’s slightly scratched but complete collection of Andy Gibb records (alas not all with posters).
Most of teh Records listed have MINT or RARE in the descriptions. Mine are neither.

You could decorate your wall with them. Or sell them to Hildy San Tomas from Trading Spaces for 30 cents a piece so that she can decorate a wall with them.

You could always give them to Goodwill or the local thrift store. I see lots o’ folks digging thru the vinyl selection.

I will never forgive my friend for snagging a beautiful, practically mint copy of Physical Graffiti from the local Goodwill. And he got it right before I could…

How about a garage sale?

I would donate them all to your local school districts. The crap they’ve had for umpteen years is in much worse shape. You KNOW they’re not getting the funds necessary to create meaningful programs. They’d be grateful forever. And so would the kids.

All good suggestions and honestly I don’t know why I couldn’t think of them on my own. Must be a brain cloud. I did think of a garage sale but I work on weekends and am pretty lazy the rest of the time so that didn’t appeal. Besides I figured I’d sell maybe 12 out of the 600 and still have to figure out where to take the rest.

I will check with the local schools first and whatever they don’t want will go to Goodwill.

Bonus for me: The nearest Goodwill donation center is near where my Uncle works. If I time it right I can take him to lunch at the Chinese Buffet. Yum!

Assuming that you don’t have really crappy taste in music, send them to me! I provide a home for unwanted vinyl, and carefully clean all new audio pets.
