Donna on West Wing (1/8): That was a cheap shot.

So Donna lays this self-righteous routine on the Georgia senator’s aide because the aide hid the senator from Josh and all the rest of the White House lackeys.

I wanted to say, “SHOVE IT DONNA!”

The senator is entitled to avoid Josh, Donna’s boss, all she wants. (Don’t want to get all checks-and-balancesy here, but that really is the bottom line.)

As far as Donna’s big holier-than-thou speech, Josh is an engaging character and all, but he has shown himself to be an arrogant prick, especially to his political opponents.

IMO the aide did nothing to be ashamed of. It was a cheap shot – typical of the WW.

(I do genuinely love the show, by the way.)

I wouldn’t watch Sorkin’s political circle-jerk if I were paid.

Thank you so much for that insightful, generous contribution to the conversation, RikWriter. When come back, bring pie.

I didn’t see it as a cheap shot at all; I see it as Donna’s perspective on the issue. Sure, the senator is entitled to spend all day hiding from a phone call from the President, but it isn’t a very dignified or brave way to address the issue at hand. And I see it as Donna being proud of her association with Josh, who she obviously has a tremendous amount of respect for.

I had an odd sense of dread throughout this episode; I was expecting something really, really bad to happen. I have no idea why, everything just seemed foreboding. The approach to the rope line, the walk off the stage; I was thinking something was about to happen to Bartlett. Was it just me?

Too bad the thing that was about to happen wasn’t cancellation.

But… didja bring pie?

My cat’s breath smells like useless contributions.

Ow! Okay, I’ll stop!

I thought the Georgia Senator was being a total idiot. She is the same party as the President. If the President wants to talk to you, you take the call. If you disagree with the President then tell you aren’t going to vote for the bill. But to run and hide from the leader of your own party and the President of the United States does not seem politically savy.

I would think that the Senator would have taken the call. Even if she told the president “No”, she would likely improve in her consituents’ eyes for standing up to him.

Plus, she was a freshman senator. It really seemed to me like she was pushing her luck snubbing the president like that, I mean on her first day? A little risky, I would think. It’s not like she has a bank of favors to pull from. What’s she gonna do when she needs a favor?

And Mr Visible I too had a bad feeling during the rope line.

I don’t know… On your first day, would it be worse to avoid the phone call altogether than to say NO to POTUS? I didn’t find Donna’s comments cheap - I think she was trying to give her colleague advice. Donna’s character is pretty emotional, so it makes sense that it would come across that way.

I had the same ominous feeling during the rope line. And I thought that the envelope might contain some sort of nasty virus. Sad how our perspectives have changed over the last year.

I thought Donna was great in trying to flush out the senator. Her quick thinking in the airport was really fun.

This isn’t the first ep where Josh has been presented as a jerk. Liked the line where the pres said he wanted to be the guy, whereas Josh wnated to be the guy the guy depended on.

Too bad - looks like we got 2 WW threads going here. I wanna make sure all of you are treated to my brilliant commentary.

(Of course - I don’t watch the show. I just make a point of opening and participating in threads concerning it! <insert putz smiley here>)

MrVisible I totally had that feeling for the entire show. I don’t know what it was about the atmosphere of last night’s episode, because I’ve had that feeling watching the show before, but I kept waiting for some Hinkley character to leap out of the woodwork with a handgun.

Weird.

Donna wasn’t taking a shot at the aide, she was taking a shot at the senator for asking the aide to run interference. The senator in effect didn’t have the courage of her convictions–she was voting against the President and didn’t have the courage to take the call and say no, thus taking a hit to political clout.

This parallels a story line from earlier in the year in which Leo has Charlie run interferance for Bartlett to keep the Prez from taking a call from the Secretary General (who wanted some parking tickets fixed) of the UN. The difference is that Bartlett didn’t know, and when he found out, called up the Secretary and gave him a royal ass-chewing (which turned out to be the SG’s secretary), for wasting his time. Bartlett confronted a sticky situation head on, the Senator hid from it. She deserved the shot Donna took at her.

Also, it seemed to be a warning to the aide: if the Senator has you hiding her from the President on your first day, what will you be doing for her by the end of her term? It had the ring of “there are nicer people to work for; you may want to shop your resume around” to me.

On an unrelated note… when are they going to release WW Season I on DVD? It’s been out in England for months, but we still can’t get it here! That seems just… unAmerican.

Damn straight, they should release it here, and at Buffy prices, not ST:TNG prices. I never saw any of the first season except a rerun or two, and didn’t get into it until the season two premier. I want to see season 1, dangit.
