I could absolutely not resist adding my 2¢ to this bile filled slugfest. First I think you overreacted to Ukele Ike’s joke, a lot. Get a sense of humor. You’ll need it in the yeard to come.
Second I think you are seriously deluded if you think you’ll have any impact on your child’s life, let alone a positive one, by banning all Disney products. Your goal seems to be to raise an automiton to your own specifications. It won’t happen. Your child will grow beyond your control starting from day one. Encourage your child to see out a variety of enligtening things and keep them all in moderation.

Can a new person to this thread answer your particular question? I dunno what all lee’s problems are with Disney, other than what has already been expressed, but I haven’t always been thrilled with the movies. The animated movies seem like safe kid stuff but many parents don’t seem to remember that some are PG and include a disturbing level of violence.
I also don’t like how Disney co-ops great fairy tales and stories, but it’s not their fault people ignore the originals. They also market and commercialize everything which can be a little creepy.
However, I am quite impressed with the Disney Channel. They do original programming for older kids, and for preschoolers they have Playhouse Disney. The programs are wonderful and they are shown without commercials for products (they only have promos for other shows). I don’t know what any progressive parent could hate about Out of the Box, for example. Tony’s got Dreds, Vivian’s southeast asian and wears funky clothes, they emphasize singing and art, and their art projects and costumes are never “perfect.” Bear in the Big Blue House is also lovable. Stanley is excell-- oh, why go on. Any well-informed parent knows all this.
Disney is both good and bad. The movies I am not so keen on. The TV and the excellent website that goes with it (lots of educational games and stuff, all free) gets two thumbs up from this mom.

Yep…and what you expressed Cranky is how I suspect most people see Disney, a bit of good AND a bit of bad. Like most stuff targetted towards kids really…you can enjoy the individual movies/games etc but hate the hype and merchandising and blatant manipulation of kids into the consumer lifestyle. I don’t know ANY parent who doesn’t dislike that.
However, lee seems to have quite a different perception of the Corporation, and I just wondered what it was that made Disney deserving of a complete ban. I am seriously curious, because Disney is not as pervasive here in Australia and I have never heard of anybody getting up-in-arms about it. Perhaps it is different in the US, but I’ll never know unless lee chooses to share her experience of Disney.

I was going to refrain from commenting in this thread and Kelly and Lee may not read this.
However, you consistently ask for intolerance while showing none. Yes it would be nice if you received tolerance, and I think for the most part that you do. However, you must show tolerance, and in that, the tolerance that must be shown is that you have to accept that people will NOT get it, and that the less tolerance you show them, the more they will defend against “Understanding” your situation.
If you’d like them to be tolerant of you, then you must tolerate them as bigots. That’s the only way you’ll receive true tolerance. And even then you may never achieve the level of tolerance that you would like. However, I think that you are contributing to the intolerance by not tolerating the people making jokes.
You are headed for years of heartache and misery, not only that but your child will be headed for years of heartache and misery if YOU do not learn to be tolerant of those that are incapable of being tolerant of you.
