Don't Stump the Layman: Science Addition

Okay, this is one of my better subjects. In the past threads I opened the topics to anything and everything to cement my reputation as one of the dumber, undereducated denizens here.

This time around, 'cuz that’s how I do, I feel the need for all things science. I will say, this mostly turns out to be one of my better topics, but I’m in no way a professional, and have never had any formal education (other than the public school system) in any area.

So, the rules:

**• Your quest is to NOT stump me. I win, you win.

• Since it’s one of my stronger subjects, ALL questions will be worth one point.

• You must tally up your score after I answer your questions. I get your question right, add 1 point. I get it wrong, delete one point. You can go into the negatives.**

Mark your scores as such at the bottom of every post:

Questions asked: 5
Right: 3
Wrong: 2
Total: +1

or

Questions asked: 10
Right: 4
Wrong: 6
Total: -2

This helps with fair tally at the end.

I hereby swear not to consult any outside sources other than the knowledge which now resides in my brain. You’re just gonna have to take my word at it.

If there is any dispute over the facts or what’s too easy, bring it to attention, and we’ll have a vote.

I also hold the right to deem what’s too easy. Don’t get silly.

All in-game notes or rule refinement will be marked as such:
This is what an in-game message looks like

Other than that, ask at your own risk, and let’s have fun! Mind you, I’m not all that bright…

**The WINNER will get their next membership renewal paid, by yours truly. Or if you’re a guest, I will pay for your membership.

If that’s okay with the mods?**

That’s a strange prize, given that this board is going to quit charging to post soon. That said:

1: Viewed from above the North Pole, in which direction does the Earth rotate (spin)?
2: Viewed from above the Sun’s North Pole, in which direction does the Earth revolve (orbit around the sun)?

Is it really?! I had no idea. I’ll have to come up with something else then… give me some time to think. Anyway, Let’s dive in.

  1. Counter-clockwise

  2. Counter-clockwise? (interesting question)

Interesting approach…

1: What developmental process generates the 3 germ layers?
2: Botulism toxin acts by interfering in which stage of neurotransmission?

  1. What’s the symbol on the Periodic Table for lead and bismuth?

(no fair looking at your shirt)

  1. I don’t even know what germ layers you’re really talking about, but I’ll just guess Mitosis?

  2. Muscular? (yeesh)

You’re not gonna believe this, but I’m wearing that very shirt now! I promise not to consult my apparel!

Lead = Pb

Bismuth = B? (that’s gotta be wrong)

ETA: damn… my shirt says B is Boron… shoulda known. Bi is the answer. :smack:

I’m bad at this.

Answer 1 was “gastrulation”
Answer 2 was “vesicular docking” or “exocytosis” would have been alright too.

Asked: 2
Right: 0
Wrong: 2
Total: -2

+2. Counter-clockwise is the norm. Next, name a planet that violates either of those rules.

I’m not sure about Bismuth (Bi?) but “B” is Boron.

I’m also keeping track of players/scores in my own spreadsheet. So, as a group, we need to try and strive for a certain amount of questions to play to. Once you enter this game, you must pose 25 questions each.

1: The macromolecular complex responsible for protein synthesis is the _____.
2: What is the name for the long process on a neuron that acts as its main electrical output?

  1. Venus?
  1. Mitochondria? (i don’t think that’s right, I know they are fuel cells of the cell)

  2. axon?

Do I get half credit?

Answer 1: Ribosome.
Answer 2: Axon.

Asked: 4
Right: 1
Wrong: 3
Total: -2

You’re always such the weasel, aren’t ya?!

ZERO points!

1: Two pea plants are crossed; their genotypes are XxYy and XXYy. What proportion of the next generation is Xxyy?
2: What is the function of the cochlea?

ETA: I’m not sure why I thought a Punnett square question would be fun for anybody.

I love ya nameless… you’re really giving me a lot of credit

  1. After much drawing of diagrams, I came up with this:
    None?

  2. Aren’t they the nerves involved in hearing?

My Q’s, we’ll start easier and go up:

  1. Name a cellular structure found in Plant Cells that are NOT found in Animal Cells.
  2. Name the nucleotide found only in RNA base pairings, and NOT in DNA (not the Letter, but the actual Name of it).
  3. Name 4 Lobes of the Brain.
  4. What is the Corpus Luteum?
  5. What species of Mosquito spreads Malaria?
